Saturday report
Books read from: Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Time to Depart by Lindsey Davis. Real Life of the Parthenon by Patricia Vigderman. Mystery Guest by Nita Prose. I am listening to A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum I am listening to Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi and have put A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers to the side until later on Tuesday when I will pick it up again.
Books finished:Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi. A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers
Book Thoughts: I am really really liking A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum. I had read some good reviews of it, and put it into the giant TBR pile, and I can say that the reviews of this book are correct. It is a very good book. Rum is a Palestinian author and the book is full of the pain and sorrow of being an immigrant and the children of immigrants. The novel turns forwards and backwards in time and is the story of one immigrant Isra and her daughter Deya. It is told through both voices using Deya, the second generation immigrant child, to tell what is the up-to-date modern story and Isra to tell the story of immigration. But more than that this novel is about women. It explains how women are raised to believe that they are only vessels to the more important men in their world. It is a sad novel, but the writing and storytelling is excellent. I finished two novels while driving from Alabama to Kansas and started a third one. I listened to more of the third one while driving to Omaha to pick up my sister, so I have gotten several books knocked out that would have languished in the TBR list for much longer. All were good to great books to listen to.
Non-Book activities: I am unpacking the van this weekend. My sister arrived yesterday and I picked her up at the Omaha airport. We got groceries and went to a potluck supper last night. I got home to find out that the freezer has quit working so later today I will be throwing away frozen meat and other commodities that were in the freezer. I found some packages of rhubarb that were salvageable and so made a rhubarb crisp that was excellent. There is also some frozen sweet corn in there that I think should still be good. The freezer is running it just isn't cold enough to keep things frozen, so as long as I bake things it should be good to use.

Weekend Wrap-up
Books read from: I finally finished the worst book ever written - Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. I also finished Time to Depart by Lindsey Davis. Real Life of the Parthenon by Patricia Vigderman. I finished reading Mystery Guest by Nita Prose. I am listening to A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum.
Books finished: Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi. A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers. Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Time to Depart by Lindsey Davis. Mystery Guest by Nita Prose.
Book Thoughts: I finished reading the worst book that ever won major awards. Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. This book won the National Book Award and I wonder why? It is a horrid book. Poorly written and peopled by characters that nobody would ever want to meet or have dealings with in real life. The structure of the novel is chaotic. At times it is written in stream-of-consciousness with huge long paragraphs full of nonsense. The characters are self-indulgent, self-pitying, and drug addicted. I started reading this book for a real life book club back in January 2016. I admit that I skimmed through the last 250 pages because by this time I was completely and utterly tired of this book. I didn't have the stomach for those long stream-of-consciousness paragraphs. So I skimmed. Some people say that this book is about art. Parts of it might be, but only small parts. The love of art was just an excuse for self-indulgency.
Non-Book activities: More cleaning and dumping old stuff. It took two days of hard cleaning and we only cleared one room.

I ditched my copy of Goldfinch unread, after comments here and from my friends.
I also read A Woman Is No Man and liked it very much.
Not many readers last weekend. I admit I got busy too and didn't read as much as I'd hoped.
