Hello,
These two are the same book:
https://www.librarything.com/work/32565854 (my copy) is filed under the three playwrights whose works it contains.
https://www.librarything.com/work/5212531 is filed under the editor.
If I move to combine them I get the alert mentioned in the title. Can I just up and combine them or is some preparation needed so as to not mess up the authors?

Yes, just combine if you are sure. It is meant to make you stop and look again. Oh! Same Title by Joe Blow might not be the same book as Same Title by Sergei Kinsky.
Correct would be editor as primary author, and the others as other authors.
