1Blythewood
Joseph Haydn wrote fourteen masses over his career, all of which are lovely and show strikingly beautiful development.
Which is your favourite and why?
I will start by saying that my favourite is the St. Cecilia Mass. The "Laudamus te, benedicimus te," with its punchy opening rhythm and Soprano vocal line always gets my foot tapping. This juxtaposed to the introspective "Qui tollis peccata mundi" drives home the sombre qualities of a mass. However, it is the "Quoniam tu solus sanctus" that attracted me to this mass from my first hearing. The soaring soprano line seems to spirit one's soul to the heaven's.
