I am in again too, Silver! Echoing Leslie's thanks.

It's the perfect readathon weekend for me as I'm recovering from COVID. Perfect reason to relax with a book instead of being up and about.

It's my BFF's 40th birthday but I'll try to carve out some time for reading. I'm in!

I will be participating again this weekend. I am going to take it easy and do more reading this weekend. It is too hot to do anything else, unless I get up really early in the morning and I want to sleep in tomorrow.

Friday startup
Books read from: Winter Soldier by Daniel Mason. For the Good of All, Do Not Destroy the Birds: Essays by Jennifer Moxley. Wandering Life: A Memoir by Donna Leon. I finished listening to Column of Fire by Ken Follett and started listening to The Measure by Nikki Erlick.
Books finished: Column of Fire by Ken Follett. (as long as this book is it should have counted for 2 books. It was 918 pages in length.)
Book Thoughts: I had great fun listening to the behemoth book while driving from Montana to Alabama. 2500 miles and 24 CD's. This was a fairly standard work of historical fiction but it was about a subject that is often covered in works of historical fiction - the reigns of Mary I and Elizabeth I of England. This is a very romantic period for authors, but this book goes a bit deeper into that time and ties the Dutch War of Independence, the Huguenot Wars in France, and the Protestant Reformation all together in one giant book. These separate counties all had active Protestant wars and rebellions going on at the same time and in many ways they were related to each other as events in one country affected the events in another. Added to the religious upheaval were the dynastic struggles for power. Follett ties all of them together in an easy to understand way. Follett doesn't sugar coat any of the religious wars but he adds nuance and layers be bringing in the Humanistic philosophies written by Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, and others that changed the way common people looked at matters of faith. Faith became more personal and more inner and the form of worship changed greatly in this time period. Follett brings all of that into this book and does a good job weaving pieces and parts of all of that into one story. Like all such endeavors there are places where the author succeeds beyond expectations and places were the story becomes sappy and trite, but the overall novel is a great entry point for readers to start studying this time period.
Non-Book Activities: I am back in Alabama and am exhausted. I unloaded the van today. Got rid of all the furniture. Took the books to the Used Bookstore, and put the yarn into the yarn exchange bins at the library. I did all of that in the hottest part of the day and am bow ready for bed. I doubt I will read much tonight. I also called the cable TV company and will not be able to get the TV fixed until late Sunday. That means I will miss my favorite Sunday morning shows - but I also missed the last week of the Olympics and lived so I will survive this as well

Sunday afternoon
I am enjoying a blissful afternoon on the sun porch reading and watching the birds with the cat on my lap. I saw a hawk a while ago.
>13 Cecilturtle:
Your news of a new cat has me thinking it’s time for me to adopt a new cat. One in my lap belongs to my niece. I’ve had him a couple weeks while she’s on vacation.
Books: After watching Bridgerton on tv last night, l picked up Romancing Mr Bridgerton to re-read for pure fun and escape.
I also started, and was immediately hooked by The Hallowed Hunt, fantasy by Lois McMaster Bujold.
Read Sunday papers.
Breakfast 1 was oatmeal with fruit, nuts and cinnamon.
Breakfast 2 - mini croissants, toasted.
I’m thinking of lunch but it’s already mid-afternoon, plus l can’t disturb cat on my lap. Guess l’ll forget lunch and move straight to happy hour once the cat leaves. .
Other activity: watered plants, filled bird saucers and feeders.
Thoughts: l should be getting ready to leave for a few days. Intending to leave early tomorrow morning to go see my sister in Chapel Hill 2 hrs away.
Sunny and hot, 87 F/31 C.

Sunday Report
Books read from: Winter Soldier by Daniel Mason. For the Good of All, Do Not Destroy the Birds: Essays by Jennifer Moxley. Wandering Life: A Memoir by Donna Leon. I am listening to The Measure by Nikki Erlick.
Books finished: Column of Fire by Ken Follett. (as long as this book is it should have counted for 2 books. It was 918 pages in length.)
Book Thoughts: I am over the halfway point in Winter Soldier. I am reading it slowly because it offends my sensibilities. It is extremely grizzly and that is disturbing to me. The writing is lyrical and I love that but it is a real emotional roller-coaster for me. I hope it is a bit smoother reading now that I am getting to the end of the battle scenes. The book of essays about bird poems continues to interest me and I find it much more relaxing to read that the novel. The Measure by Nikki Erlick has proven to be a very interesting book and it is more than holding my interest. This one might be a 5 star read - my second for the year.
Non-Book Activities: I thought I would take a day to myself on Friday but that didn't happen. My TV didn't work so I spent time on the phone, then on Saturday morning I spent time at the Xfinity store. When that didn't work I was back on the phone. I did learn that if you want prompt service from Xfinity Tech call about 7 AM on a Sunday morning. I didn't have nearly as long of a wait time as I did on Friday. I went to Gadsden and knitted on Saturday and I finished my sweater! Yeah! Now all I have to do is block it and then I can wear it this winter. I started on a matching hat and the lady at the knit shop took back the unused ball of yarn I had. I purchased some yarn for a cowl for Christmas and that won't be delivered until October, so it won't county against my pledge to stop purchasing yarn until after my move.

Books finished: Column of Fire by Ken Follett. (as long as this book is it should have counted for 2 books. It was 918 pages in length.)
Book Thoughts: Without TV or radio my downtime (while I cooled off) was totally done with reading and knitting. I didn't finish any books on Sunday and I ended up going to my local Starbucks to cool off with a Frappuccino. I didn't sit there and read. Instead I sat there and looked at LT.
Non-Book Activities: I did more reading today than I thought I would. The lack of TV or radio has really crimped my style. I did pack a box of knitting patterns and books. I also packed three boxes of yarn and got them into the van. I worked a bit in the yard this morning and got some more pots ready to put into the van. It was so hot that when I came in a drank an entire bottle of water! The cable TV won't be hooked up until Wednesday, so I am missing most of the Democratic convention. Then to add to my misery on Friday the transmitter for the local NPR station went down and it went silent. So no TV. No radio. That leaves books and packing.
