Extreme horror action slashery books needed :-)

I was recommended “The Haunting of Hill House” by Shirley Jackson and unfortunately it doesn't quite move me, even though it's really cleverly written. I'd like to read something really extreme, not a psycho serial killer thing, I'm not interested in that. But something with zombies and lots of slashery gore stuff, for example and and eerie feeling that comes up when you read Lovecrafts descriptions of those weird cities with strange folks walking around. Literary okay, of course. I liked the first volume of Justin Cronin's trilogy, I like the action a lot, but then it got super boring...Not at all into Clown-stuff or chainsaw-murderer. More into nice action and adventure
