Can somebody please explain to me the proper use of the drop-down-list (with numbers up to 10) located immediately to the right of the title field in the "edit your book page". Also, what effect does such an entry have? I cannot see any difference in the listing of my books.
The background: I have three books which are part of a 10-volume work (with one common ISBN) and I hoped to differentiate between them by use of this drop-down-list.

That number determines how a title is sorted. If it isn't set, or is set to 1, the title sorts on the first letter. If it is set to another number, that is the character the title is sorted on. For example, if you have a title starting with an article, you probably don't want to sort on that. so The Notebook should be set at 5 - T, h, e, space, N.
Mostly, the computer sets it automatically, but there are certain words that are articles in one language (I have Die Ballkönigin set at 5, but Die Trying at 1) and the computer doesn't do a good job at those.
You should add vol 1... to the titles of your multiple volume work if you enter them separately. Bit, be aware that you may need to separate and recombine these books. The autocombiner only looks at the first 20 characters in the title (or until it gets to a colon), so these books often get combined into a single work.

Go to the editions page, and you can click on 'Separate' on one of the two editions there. Check that the works are correctly labeled. (The top of the page will have your book info. You want the work title. If needed this can be corrected on the right of the work page by clicking on 'Recalculate'. I suggest that you then set up a series to connect them.
