Not a Heritage Press book, but still worthwhile..

I just excavated a book from my storage that is very much like a Heritage Press book and it isn't rare or expensive, but it is worth having in your collection.

It is:
Morier, James. The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan. NY: Random House, 1937. 7 x 10.5 in; 26 + 404 pp. Numerous color illustrations and b & w line drawings by Cyrus LeRoy Baldridge. Foreword by Christopher Morley; unsigned note “Concerning the Origins of This Book” and a “Note by the Illustrator After His Year in Persia” by C. L. B. Full color 2 page map at front.

Binding is full buckram printed with a wrap-around full color illustration by Baldridge. The colophon, “ABOUT THIS EDITION OF HAJJI BABA OF ISPAHAN”, states It was Designed and Illustrated by Cyrus LeRoy Baldridge in collaboration with the Book of the Month Club, Inc. The type used is English Monotype Bell. The Composition, Printing and Binding was by The Haddon Craftsmen, Inc., in Camden, New Jersey, under the supervision of Richard Ellis, Typographer. The paper, Gladfelter Natural Wove, was supplied by Perkins & Squire Co., New York. The painting on the cover was reproduced in four-color offset, printed on Bancroft buckram by Reehl Litho Co., New York. The full color illustrations were reproduced in offset by the Zeese-Wilkinson Co., in Long Island City.

It came with a full color d/j that replicates the binding, but fine copies with an equally fine d/j are hard to come by and fetch a premium when found. Copies with damaged d/js are easier to come by and can be found at some crazily low prices.

Included within the book is a "story within a story" that is printed on different colored paper (a light pastel rose) with its own separate pagination called Story of the Baked Head.

The book was issued to BOMC members as well as being offered to the trade. My copy is a trade issue. The trade d/j has the $3.50 price printed on it.

Published back when trade books were still well made.

The LEC and HP did this book in 1947. It is not one I have but it would be fun to compare the treatments.

>5 maisiedotes: Thanks, but those are scans, not photos. I have a large flat bed scanner I use because I take lousy photographs!

>1 Glacierman: nice illustrations. does this book contain an introduction?
I purchased a c.f. braun book recently after you mentioned their name on this group and the production quality exceeded my expectation. The only serious shortcoming was the lack of an introduction.
I'll try posting some pictures of the book soon.
could you please share what you know of the c.f. braun books?

>7 blue.eyes2: It has the foreword by Morley and a couple notes on the book by the artist.

RE: The Private Press of C. F. Braun. See here. There's a title list further down in that post.

>8 Glacierman: Thank you. I give below a few photographs from 'The Garden of Kama' published by C.F. Braun.

Extracts (first few lines) from two of the poems:

What the book really lacks is an introduction. The reader has no way of knowing that the Laurence Hope who is credited with arranging the verses was actually someone who wrote the actual poems. That is, these are original poems written in English and not any translation from some Indian text(s). The real name of Laurence Hope was Violet Nicolson. She was a British woman, married to a British army officer. Upon his death in India, due to a botched operation, she committed suicide at the age of 39. More details about her in this BBC article:
