Saturday reading

Books read from: English Creek by Ivan Doig. Walk This Way: Run-DMC, Aerosmith, and the Song That Changed American Music Forever by Geoff Edgers. I am listening to Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See.

Books finished: Who Watcheth by Helene Tursten. Close to Death by Anthony Horowitz

Book Thoughts: I am still catching up on things from this week but I managed to finish 2 books. Who Watcheth and A Children's Bible. Both were easy reading. I am finding that I am enjoying the book on the rock classic and how it also became a Hip-Hop classic. It turns out that it is a dual biography of the group Run-DMC and the rock band Aerosmith. I am also loving English Creek. It is so western and so well written. It makes me long for the West.

Non-Book Activities: I have been cooking all week. The first week of the month is when all of my clubs and groups meet. Tuesday night was Wine Club and I made a quinoa and sweet potato salad from my favorite cookbooks ever - the Moosewood cookbooks and a radicchio, apple, arugula, and almond salad to take. Then on Thursday I cooked pork chops and sauerkraut for my potluck lunch group. Today I will be cooking for my supper group. I also managed to attend my knitting class on Thursday and packed 5 boxes of books yesterday. I need to speed up the packing or I won't be ready for October 25th.

Sunday report

Books read from: English Creek by Ivan Doig. Walk This Way: Run-DMC, Aerosmith, and the Song That Changed American Music Forever by Geoff Edgers. My computer book is On Girlhood: 15 Stories from the Well-Read Black Girl Library edited by Glory Edim. I am listening to Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See.

Books finished: Who Watcheth by Helene Tursten. Close to Death by Anthony Horowitz

Book Thoughts: This moving thing has really cut into my reading time this weekend. So has the cooking thing. I was so tired last night that I didn't read anything in English Creek before bed. I did read a couple of pages in the Hip-hop book.

Non-Book Activities: I spent all day Saturday cooking. I made a very good chicken dish for my monthly supper club group. We had 12 people eating and I botched the first attempt at the dish. I burnt the chicken and didn't realize that the sauce was made in the same dish, so it was burnt. That meant another trip to the grocery store to get 4 more pieces of chicken and then cooking. I was almost 20 minutes late for the supper and in fact, the people hosting called me while I was driving over to find out where I was since I had the main dish. The meal was very good. We had an outstanding fennel dish, and a great lasagna rollup made with pumpkin filling. The carrot cake was fantastic. It was warm in Alabama and so the cream cheese frosting melted a bit, but the cake had great texture and taste. It was a very good meal for my last one with this group.

Sunday evening report

Books read from: English Creek by Ivan Doig. Walk This Way: Run-DMC, Aerosmith, and the Song That Changed American Music Forever by Geoff Edgers. My computer book is On Girlhood: 15 Stories from the Well-Read Black Girl Library edited by Glory Edim. I am listening to Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See.

Books finished: Who Watcheth by Helene Tursten. Close to Death by Anthony Horowitz

Book Thoughts: I can't believe how tired I am today. I did read about 100 pages in the Walk This way book. I was so tired that I didn't want to do anything so I sat and read. Of course, it is easy reading. I am also tired of these hyperbolic titles. Walk This Way: Run-DMC, Aerosmith, and the Song That Changed American Music Forever - Really? I mean really? Give me a break. it might be important but I am not sure it was that big of an impact. I am the kind of person who thinks that history makes the judgements on this kind of thing. Not the person who wrote a book. That title sounds more like a sales pitch for selling a book title than it does a honest assessment of the importance of a song.

Non-Book Activities: I went to a music concert this afternoon. It is a community choir in which one of my friends sings. The music was good, but I couldn't wait to get up and get out of the building. It was hot today and so the concert venue was hot and stuffy. Somebody near me had on some kind of weird perfume and it smelled offal. Then even though many of the singers were good most of them didn't get the microphone close enough to their mouth and so you couldn't understand the words to the songs. Most of the singers over estimated the power of their voice and didn't realize that most of the people sitting in the packed venue couldn't really hear them or understand what they were saying. I think that being tired made me overly judgmental.

Monday wrapup

Books read from: English Creek by Ivan Doig. Walk This Way: Run-DMC, Aerosmith, and the Song That Changed American Music Forever by Geoff Edgers. My computer book is On Girlhood: 15 Stories from the Well-Read Black Girl Library edited by Glory Edim. I am listening to Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See.

Books finished: Who Watcheth by Helene Tursten. Close to Death by Anthony Horowitz

Book Thoughts: I didn't read as much last night as I wanted but I am more than half done with the Walk This Way book. I packed 2 boxes of books last night while watching Ridley on PBS and got the locations of 3 boxes entered into LT. Not bad for a Sunday evenings work - even if I am tired.

Non-Book Activities: I watched my Sunday evening PBS shows and caught up on my book reviews and managed to do an hours worth of knitting. Also washed up the pots from the Saturday supper and did a load of clothes. Today I will be boxing books and knickknacks from my bookcases. I hope to get a whole bookcase done today - before it gets hot. I get so tired of the continual summer here in Alabama. It is to cool down this week and I will welcome it.
