Once More With Footnotes

So recently I picked up An unofficial companion to the Novels of Terry Pratchett and as I was flipping through, I came across several references to his short stories and the accompanying collection Once More with Footnotes. So I pulled up the Almighty Amazon, trying to figure out what they were going to poach me for a copy. The answer? $662.35. Or for a *real* deal, I could've gotten it for $662.33. What makes this book so valuable? In furthering my research, I found only 51 libraries IN THE WORLD own this book!!

I thought I would share with fellow Pratchettians, as I had NO CLUE this book was going to be this hard to get!

Looking at my copy, found by accident in the Forbidden Planet in London a few years ago - I didn't know Once More With Footnotes existed and was just browsing - it cost me £17.99. It was published by NESFA Press, an offshoot of the New England Science Fiction Association. Being in Old England, I don't know anything about NESFA other than what is on their web site but I suspect that their print runs are not huge and because they are a specialist imprint they may not be noticed by libraries.

On Amazon UK there is now one going for over £800.

I guess that's a good reason. I personally never knew a collected edition of the short stories existed and it's tragic that the run was so short. I try to keep up with Pratchett-related releases and this one completely passed me by in 2004.

I'm another one desperate for a copy of this book, but without the available funds to warrant paying over the odds for it. Such a shame it had such a sort print run. With any luck they'll re-issue it eventually... well, one can hope!

Got it through Amazon UK marketplace a couple of years ago. It's worth checking there fairly often, or somewhere like Green Metropolis (who have limits on how ridiculous a price you can charge).

It's enjoyable enough, but ... not terribly DiscWorldy. And not Terry at his best. Although the story of the Time Travelling Chicken is pretty damn fine ...

My sister has the book but sometimes shows off about it and will not let me touch it.

sister in #7 would be me, and I let him touch it, he read the chicken story, while I was watching him. Got it for cover price plus shipping to UK when it came out, there was a limited run 2,500 copies. It's just everything he'd written that was previously uncollected, speeches, articles and stories. Interest piece only.

:) Sorry, that was the mother/librarian in me coming out. Also the book collector and reader. Nothing I hate more than opening a wonderful book to find someone else's food droppings or worse on a page. Ewww.

I have a copy. It was a book that was published for the Worldcon in Boston in 2004. TP was the guest of honor (I also ate in the Mended Drum). NESFA ran the con. They or their offshoots run most of the SFF cons in New England, they also have their own press and print/re-print books.

Probably not all of the short stories by Pratchett, though, but better than six hundred pounds for a short story compilation.

Thanks for providing those links, rojse. I have a copy of Once More with Footnotes in my hand at this very moment - however, it's a "outerloan" copy through my local library branch & has to go back to Minnesota tomorrow. (-sigh-) My next step is to start emailing NESFA* Press and ask them to reprint it - hey, how about in time for the 2nd North American Discworld Con next July! Maybe we could get an email campaign going. Who's with me?
