Following mention that the UK was considering changes to their Labour Act in an earlier post comes news that a private member has tabled the Health and Safety at Work etc Act (Amendment) Bill - the second reading of which is scheduled for 29 November 2024.
The Bill seeks to place a legal requirement on employers to take proactive steps to prevent violence and harassment. This includes implementing comprehensive policies and training programmes designed to create a safer and more inclusive work environment. We haven't yet had an opportunity to study the Bill - but have requested the MP to send us a copy - so watch this space for further news.
A second Bill in which we have taken a particular interest is the Football Governance Bill which aims to create a sustainable governance framework for English Football. In addition to our interest as "legal authors" we are also avid fans of one the famous English Football teams - the name of which it it would be indiscreet to disclose at this stage for reasons which will soon become apparent. The primary focus of the Bill is the establishment of an Independent Football Regulator which will be responsible for implementing the provisions of the Bill.
We have obtained a copy of this Bill and have seized the opportunity to write a new book -"The Football Governance Bill Explained for Fans". We'll be placing some copies in the Early Reviewers Give-Away for December - provided of course Tim, Abigail & Co accept our submission. So all lawyers who have an interest in governance or football should make a note to put in their "Requests".
Reading the above its interesting that we've posted about two pieces of UK legislation when we are South Africans- so we'll go and look for what is happening in our own backyard, though we've just had a general election a few months ago and new "government of national unity" which is still finding its feet and setting priorities for the next 5 years so new legislation may take sometime to formulate. There were some "holdovers" from the previous "parliament" which were dealt with by the President - and we'll mention some of them in the next post.
Otherwise it will good to here about new legislation going down in other jurisdictions (Hello Vienna from Canberra!).
