South Africa

Have not had an opportunity yet to familiarize ourselves with the total range of topics and countries covered in this group , since we are relative newbies to the entire LT concept.
But as the subject indicates - we are from South Africa: a country which has 12 official languages (since 1994 we had 11, but this year recognition was given to sign-language which of course covers all the languages. The current problem with sign language is the dearth of qualified interpreters!).
The predominant written languages are English and Afrikaans. The so-called "African" or "Black" languages have a huge oral tradition - but there are increasing efforts to stimulate the written literary traditions.
Anyway this is a first post just to say Hi. Looking forward to seeing what going on inside of this group and make a contribution in due course.

Welcome, Graeme and Veldra. Reading Globally is a great group; I especially like the theme reads and adding my reading to the country threads (see Southern Africa, for instance. I'm the last poster with The Exploded View by Ivan Vladislavić). They are a great source of ideas from different regions.

I also belong to The Global Challenge, in which we try to read a self-designated number of books from every country.

But my primary residence is at Club Read. A nice hub for thoughtful readers.

Disclosure: I am admin for the latter two groups. :-)

Anywho, welcome!
