The conflict between Kim and Travis started way back, I think Kim suspected this was the trigger and wanted to confirm the timings. Travis’s sister-in-law is in a position to know the continuing animosity is affecting Travis badly. I think she’s hoping that by telling Kim about her sister that Kim can do something to mend bridges.

I agree that Travis's sister in law is noting extra signs of stress and thinks she can help him by letting Kim know what he is coping with at home.

I think he was having trouble coping with his wife's health situation and lashed out. I think the sister wanted Kim to know that underneath everything, he's still a decent man.
