How exactly do you that? I tried to search for DVD's and couldn't get anything.

Right now there's no good way. It's been long-discussed as a possible future improvement, but I think it's still pretty far down in Tim's to do list. Check out the discussions in the Recommended Site Improvements group.

They shouldn't. There's no good way. The site isn't designed for films (or music, for that matter). I'll be very happy, though, when there's a "FilmThing" and a "MusicThing"!

I would love to be able to add my DVDs. I hope this addition really is in the works.

You can add via manual entry, copying existing records (yes, several hundred are already in the system), or by using the LT widget on Amazon. It doesn't take much relevant information though, so don't expect LT to work well with the resulting record, unless you do a lot of extra editing.

Some (r1) DVDs have ISBNs, and the distributing company is broadly analogous to publisher, for record purposes. I am using directors as authors for the time being - I don't like confusing books with DVDs, and this separates my different versions of Pride and Prejudice, say, pretty neatly into Jane Austen, Simon Langton (BBC 1995), and Joe Wright (2005). An online record of what we own is more useful to me than the social/sharing aspects of LT, and I firmly believe that these are three quite different 'works'. I would like to see FilmThing and MusicThing though, since I'm sure some really nifty things could be done with full data.

(I haven't bothered attempting to do this with CDs, which are far less simple than DVDs, since iTunes does a lot of what I need, but not as well as LT and not online...)

I'd rather LibraryThing would just stick with books.

I agree. Similar sites for music, etc. would be nice, but I wouldn't like to see them mingled.

I would prefer LT stick with books as well. JMO. There are many other sites where you can catalog your movies, music, etc.

What are some of the good sites where you can catalog your movies?

Try DVDSpot.com for movies.

I just checked DVDSpot. It appears to allow only those films that are presently available on DVD, rather than all movies. Or am I missing something?

And it takes FOREVER to manually enter a movie on DVDspot... As most of my DVDs are Region 2 Swiss Editions that means I have to manually enter 90% of my collection of about 350 films. I already gave up again. Other than that it looks like a pretty cool site.

imdb.com allows you to rate movies you've seen.

Pretty big database.

flixster.com lets you rate, review, and keep lists of movies. it's a tad myspaceish though.

i used to use reader2.com (reader squared) for my books and they have a sister site (myfilmz.net) set up to catalog movies separately with the same user ID. it's a good site, just a bit slow sometimes.

I think, LT is only for books.. may be you can try using - http://www.imdb.com/
ex: my movie list - http://www.imdb.com/mymovies/list?l=24757861

For dvd cataloging sites, I'd reccommend http://www.dvdaficionado.com/index.html. The site can be a little confusing to use at first, as it's not very flashy but I find that it works really well and has much more of a "database" feel to it than the other sites mentioned in this thread. Also, you can specify Region 1 or 2 when searching for your titles.

I just checked out Squirl (that's the site of John, LT's co-developer): There are special collection type for films, with the following fields:

Title, Media, Director, Cast
Description
Tags, Rating
Genre
Length
Writer, Studio, Producer(s)
Language, Country
Condition
Release Date

He doesn't have a region field, but that can be done through a tag for the time being.

it's not very flashy

I consider that a "plus"! Some of the other sites I've looked at make my eyes ache from all the glitz. In fact, it's the lack of flash that attracted me to LT.

#19, totally agree. I hate the sites that require me to download 30 MB of additional software before I can start using them.
GFI, who even bounces most cookies.

I completely agree. A lack of flash is a good thing, but you can also go too far the other way, giving a website a 'sparten' look and feel.

I would give an arm and a leg to have a MusicThing and FilmThing created. A link on the homepage to the spinoffs would be a wonderful addition.

I wouldn't want seperate databases for music and/or movies. I consider them part of my library -- libraries have contained audio-visual materials for as long as I can remember. In the second grade (1976) I remember checking out a tape with "Good Day Sunshine" on it -- I listened to that song over and over and over (much to my parents' displeasure!).

I already catalog my movies here. I'm not interested in directors, actors, etc, so it hasn't presented a challenge to me that LT doesn't currently have fields dedicated to them. I upload via the Amazon widget and tag them "DVD" -- no other tags.

Are you talking about the Beatle song Good Day Sunshine?

24pdxwoman

Beatles, Good Day Sunshine, off Revolver (1966). I don't think the tape was Revolver -- I think it was a compilation of some kind.

I thought so. Just wanted to check.

keep LT for good old books. Let MusicThing or Moviething take the rest. a bibliophile is not necessary a filmophile or musicologist.

I agree with most of the posts above. LibraryThing should be for books only, as it does state right at the top, Catalog your Books Online.

I used to use dvd-tracker.com and cd-tracker.com when I cataloged those collections. If a FilmThing and MusicThing were eventually created and integrated, that would be fine, too.

I wouldn't mind if it were as simple as the way I currently catalog my DVD library on DVD Aficionado (www.dvdaf.com) where I simply have to type in a title and a list of various release and Region encoding versions come up for me to choose from.

I'm from the camp that is still eagerly but patiently waiting for the ability to catalog DVDs. The reason I first found LT was because I was looking for an online-only book cataloging application first and foremost. That is still my primary reason for using it---to keep track of my books for insurance and shopping purposes. All of the other features the site offered back when I signed up and that have since been added are just the sweet, sweet, SWEET bibliophilic gravy! Still I consider the term "library" to be flexible when it comes to collections and feel it can and should also apply to other media collections like DVDs and CDs.

I ultimately wouldn't care or whinge (a lot, heh) if a DVDThing and CDThing were created as separate applications as long as the user interfaces were still as easy and seamless as LT but I would prefer to be able to look at all my "libraries" in one location. Sort of like an online-only version of the Collectorz software.

Mah wife Big Ugly is a librarian n ah told her long ago that someday books would be relegated to the back outhouse and little thingies you can see, hear, and smell, maybe even feel, will be stocked.

with this in mind, what is so darned bad bout listing, say, unbreakable in the title, and bruce willis and samuel l. jackson in the authors thingie and rating it such; maybe reviewing it such, too?

there is no LT policeman to stop one from loading in his DVDs, tapes, or records. Heck, I have an Enrico Caruso RCA recording 78 rpm i can enter.

LT is freedom in a world of Bushes that hide freedom.
