No real choice I'd say. I often find myself reading something like this and wonder what I would have done. I have been lucky to live in a democratic country and don't think I could or should judge someone in this position.

Yes as he had no choice. He had to do what was expected or he probably would be killed.

Agree with everyone here - his "choice," such as it was, was unacceptable to Janusz. As the torturers knew it would be.
