Any thoughts why Janusz was so worried about the documents that Dilecki had left behind?

I think he was worried that the Polish people would think he was involved in the torture of other Poles during the Cold War. Also, there might be something there that would make it easy to blackmail him.

I agree with >2 Olivermagnus:. Something that he can use to blackmail would be my guess.

I agree; he is very open to blackmail. His political position is fragile and he fears the increasing influence of the bigger nations, particularly the USA and Russia.

Scared of the information that Dilecki knew about him and how this could take away his power, or even his freedom or life. Blackmail would also be one potential option.

His past work under the communists coming to light would be his downfall, even though it was done under duress.

I believe Blackmail is the reason and would be my guess.

Yes - there was something in those documents about Janusz's past that could be used against him in the upcoming elections. His ties to the communist leaders or his acquiescing to turning in others during their regime are two possibilities that come to mind.

He obviously fears that Dilecki documented the work Janusz did as an informer. This information getting out will ruin Janusz. It could potentially do a lot of damage to Poland, too.
