A Traveller in Time by Alison Uttley - 2012
Written in 1934, Alison Uttley’s (1884-1976) young adult novel about time travel is a delight.
The young, quiet and sickly protagonist, Penelope, is a dreamer and reader. She visits her aunt’s ancient and remote manor house farm in Derbyshire and finds that she slips back in time to the era of Queen Elizabeth I where she becomes entangled in the Babington plot to replace Elizabeth with Mary, Queen of Scots. Penelope has to live the way the Elizabethans did, eat their food and share their homes. She is caught between the past and present, which she flicks between, but frustratingly finds herself unable to warn those she befriends that their cause is hopeless or to alter the past in any way.
Beautifully bound in green cloth, blocked on the cover with a silver and black design, this xv + 214 page book has eight colour illustrations by Omar Rayyan and is introduced by Joanna Briscoe. The endpapers and slipcase are plain dark green and the latter measures 23.5x16.9cm.
The Folio Society also published Alison Uttley’s The Country Child in 2008.
