The Warden by Anthony Trollope - 2014
The Folio Society has published the entire Trollope oeuvre over the years. The Warden is one of the shorter and most popular ones and was issued by the FS in 1976,1995, 1998 (same as 1995 edition but as part of the Barsetshire Chronicles set) and finally in 2014 (reviewed below).
First published in 1855, it is the first novel in the Barsetshire Chronicles series, and features the 50 year old Reverend Septimus Harding who debates what to do with a huge sum of money he’s received. The setting is a long established almshouse (Hiram’s Hospital) where elderly laborers and farmworkers who can no longer earn a living anymore are cared for. Harding has two daughters, Susan and Eleanor, the former is married to an archdeacon and settled, but finding a suitable husband for the latter is a further plot in the book.
All of Trollope’s books comment on political, gender, and social issues, and the problems with Victorian morality, and this one is no exception.
This 224 page Folio Society edition is introduced by Jane Smiley. There is a frontispiece and six delightful colour illustrations by Bill Bragg and it is bound in light brown cloth, with the cover being blocked with an image by Bill Bragg in black, blue and white. The endpapers are maps (same front and back) printed dark brown on light brown. The light brown slipcase measures 25.4x16.1cm.

Thanks. Read this recently and really enjoyed it.

I am (slowly) trying to buy all the mid-90s version of Trollope, hoping to build a complete set.
The Warden is a good introduction to Trollope.

I have this edition of The Warden and the Barchester Towers that matches. Still annoyed that they didn’t continue the series…

I really enjoyed reading this too, and went on to Barchester Towers which was enjoyable. Need to get back to the series - I think Doctor Thorne is next.
I picked up the original set a few years ago, along with the Pallisers set and a couple of other individual titles for AUD$100. Bargain!

>4 J.Sealy: Agreed. When I bought this pair the FS assured me that they would complete the series. So, every year for 3-4 years after that, I politely enquired when we'd see the remaining four books, and I was always assured that we'd see them eventually. I've given up hope on that now. It's a shame, they are lovely books. Too busy with comic books, I suppose.
