Is there a limit to review length?

I'm trying to review a book, and my review is >15 AlexandersLibrary:,000 characters long. I can't get it to save. I'm wondering if there's a limit to the review length on LT, and if so, what it is.

I was just able to add a 30K+ character review, so that shouldn't have been it.

Are you able to save it, now? If not, try a different work (just for testing purposes), or a different browser? If you're still having trouble:

1. Where are you adding the review from (which page/section)?
2. What browser and OS (operating system) are you using (e.g. Google Chrome, version 90 and Windows 7, etc.)?

I'm also having this issue for a specific review of mine. Using the latest version of Firefox on Linux EndeavourOS, I had some extensions installed that I disabled that still does not fix it. My review was longer but after editing it's only 3,936 characters so it definitely should not be a length issue. I've tried from both the book's review page and my personal library page for the book to no avail. Any suggestions? I really don't care to use a different browser unless it's absolutely necessary, but I can try a different device.

Which review, specifically? When you say editing doesn't work on "my personal library page" can you clarify exactly which page (share the URL if you can)? Thanks.

>4 kristilabrie: My apologies, I didn't receive a notification for this reply.

"my personal library page" was referring to my LibraryThing record in my catalogue of the book here: https://www.librarything.com/work/33058185/details/309288022

And to reiterate, it did not work on the review page either (I'm unsure how to link to my specific review on the work's page) https://www.librarything.com/work/33058185/reviews/309288022

Strangely enough, as I grabbed the links to share here, my review for Cozza's second book was also shortened. https://www.librarything.com/work/35141645/details/309371817 | https://www.librarything.com/work/35141645/reviews/309371817

Thank you for your time!

Edit: fixed a mistake when referring to the original book and instead showing the review screenshot for the second book, which is also cut short

LT does not send notifications of replies to your posts.

>5 AlexandersLibrary: According to your edit history of that book, the review was never edited other than being set to the truncated version, so it's not getting truncated by some other edit. Do you write your reviews on another application and paste them in? Is it possible you just didn't copy the whole thing?

>5 AlexandersLibrary: Also - are there any special characters immediately where it got cut-off? Html tags can also cause that if they are out of sequence.

>6 lilithcat: Good to know, I'll be sure to keep a closer eye on any topics I post in then, thank you!

>7 knerd.knitter: I do post reviews on StoryGraph as well and have been copy/pasting from there directly from the edit field and not the already-formatted review itself, but I definitely made sure to copy/paste the whole review, and it hasn't seemed to effect other reviews I have cross-posted, just the ones from specifically that author. I have also tried copy/pasting to a text file and then re-copy/pasting to LT in case there is some weird formatting it is keeping even if I paste without it, and also to check character count which we seemed to rule out.

>8 AnnieMod: This is probably the best lead yet, I'll definitely check, even though I believe both StoryGraph and LT use the same HTML tags, maybe writing them in again might help. I thought I had even tried omitting spoilers and their tags entirely but I'll double check.

Thank you all for your suggestions and comments! I'll report back here if anything fixed it

>8 AnnieMod: was totally right, both cases happened to be a less-than symbol/angle bracket where the reviews were getting cut off! After changing them from that symbol to say "sub-200 pages" instead, both reviews are posted perfectly fine in both cases. I'll have to keep that in mind in the future, and hopefully this helps others as well. Thank you so much AnnieMod!

>9 AlexandersLibrary: Make sure you did not leave an opening html tag symbol - it will trick the browser that everything after it is markup and it won’t get saved. I’ve done that occasionally when copying and cleaning htmls/markup languages. :)

And seems like you posted while I had this open and multitasking. Good to hear that the mystery is now solved. And yep - no less than symbols - or it is considered a start of an html tag. :)

You might be able to use < if you want the symbol. It's HTML character code that many of us have used extensively around here over the years. :)

>13 AnnieMod: True, though I think there was a bug report in the last year that got it fixed in Talk, at least.

>11 AnnieMod: Yep, I've been doing some basic HTML for a year or so now so I should've known better, as soon as you said it I immediately had a hunch that was the case, good call!

>12 keristars: Good to know, though I'll keep AnnieMod's comment after in mind as well and might just avoid it when I can. Thank you all again for the advice and help!

>15 AlexandersLibrary: I think there is still a bug around that hits the TSV export file if you both use < and some non-ascii characters in a review. You are probably not in the danger zone, but I thought I'd mention it here.
