I'm here! I'm participating in a 24 in 48 challenge this weekend, but there's no way I'd make 24 hours of reading even if I didn't have other stuff, which I do. But at least I can somewhat keep up with all of you!

I'm in again - currently reading Darkness, Take My Hand by Dennis Lehane and The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien.

I'm in. It'll probably be a naval history (non-fiction) reading weekend - with a little break from two works of fiction, one a SciFi and the other a John McGahern. And these are all paperbacks or hardcovers, so I'll probably find something to listen to as well. I am looking forward to finding out what grabs my attention!

Count me in.
Still reading The Fix by Baldacci in his Memory Man series. Baldacci will be at the book festival I’m going to next week.
I visited a great bookstore/bistro today that l hadn’t been to before. Bought 2 books:
Untamed: The Wildest Woman In America and the Fight for Cumberland Island and
The Wild Robot by Peter Brown.

Friday night startup
Books read from: I am still slowly reading in Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreve (I read a couple of pages every-other day) and slowly going through Schulz and Peanuts by David Michaelis using the same method. My computer book is Eating My Way Through Italy by Elizabeth Minchilli. I have a good start on the second book in the Balkan Trilogy, Spoilt City. I am also reading System Collapse by Martha Wells. I am listening to 1776 by David McCullough.
Books finished:
Book Thoughts: Since it was so very cold all week I spent one day just sitting and reading. On Wednesday I went to the library and got my ILL request System Collapse and then spent the next day getting a good start in reading it. I hope to finish it this weekend. Got to love Murderbot! It's better than what I hear coming out of Washington.
Non-Book Activities: We have had a week of very cold weather with snow, so I have not retrieved a single box of anything from the out-of-doors storage. That puts me behind on my moving in schedule. I have discovered I have two very leaky windows in this house. Both of them are South facing so are only allowing in excessive amounts of cold air when the wind is from the south, but when it hasn't been above freezing in a week I am sure that my gas heating bill will be very high in the coming month.
Reading Time Today: 2 hours
Time Reading this weekend: 2 hours
Time listening:
Time posting:
Food: Some great left over Indian beef with peppers and rice for supper. It was so good.
Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 490
Total Time Reading since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 1517 hours since I started doing the weekend Read-A-Thon starting in April of 2020.

Saturday morning check in:
Started this morning with The 4:50 from Paddington by Agatha Christie. A good puzzle, and so entertaining.
Will continue with Autocracy Inc. by Anne Applebaum. A serious and very good book, but scary.
Later this day we will be going through a couple of boxes of stuff from a recently deceased friend. This will take some time, but the thingamagummy that her family was phoning us about yesterday has turned up in their own boxes, one task less.

Sat a.m.
Book: The Fix by Baldacci.
Breakfast: cereal, strawberries, HB egg, interesting venison and wild pig sausage that my SIL brought from GA. Her sons shot the wild pig and the deer..
My SIL left for home this morning so, with less socializing and running around, I’ll have more time to read! For a day or two anyway, before my sis and her husband arrive tomorrow evening.

I'm about to get back into it, got distracted by other tasks today ...
I ended up picking up Autonomous: A Novel by Annalee Newitz and am listening to the next in the Shetland/Perez detective stories by Ann Cleeves, White Nights. Only about 3h so far. Looking forward to a good, quiet evening!

Sat. afternoon
Books:
The Fix and
The Alchemist, P Coelho
Lunch was a BLT and a beer on a patio by the beach.
I’ve been reading this afternoon but l keep falling asleep. Stayed up late watching episodes of Jack Reacher and Elementary. Then l got up early to spend time with my SIL before she left this morning. I usually only see her once a year when we’re in Florida. She left The Alchemist for me; she’d finished it while she was here.

Anne Applebaum has been on several of the news shows I watch on TV this last week. Her take on the Orange Asshat and dictators has been enlightening. I should get busy and read some of her books. It might help me to understand the recent lunacy.

Book Thoughts: I have been reading System Collapse and it is holding my interest, but somehow it is not filled with the verve and attitude of the previous books. Perhaps I waited too long between the novels to have the fun carry on. That makes me wonder if I should read series novels all in one batch after the series has ended or if I should read the new entry as soon as it is published? Hum, that might be the question of the day.
Non-Book Activities: This should be the last of the cold days. The sun is shining and the snow that is in direct sunlight is melting because the temperature got up into the 40's today. It will be warmer tomorrow, so tomorrow afternoon I will get out into the car port and tackle another big box of stuff. I hope to find my down comforter and the bed skirt so that I can get that bedroom ready for guests if it is needed. Work went OK this morning, but the scanner wouldn't work correctly. We decided that I wasn't waking it up correctly. I will have to do better on Monday as that is my first full day at work by myself.

Sunday afternoon.
Yesterday evening my upstairs neighbors had a party. Lots of noise so it was too difficult to concentrate on reading. I listened to the audio version of Agatha Christie’s book.
This morning I have been reading some Agatha Christie again, then it turned out I had forgotten an appointment with a neighbour.
Later another hour reading, Autocracy Inc.
>12 benitastrnad: Benita, I think this book is great. She is connecting a lot of dots for me. It’s also alarming. I think this will be a five star read for me.

Book Thoughts: It has not been a real productive reading weekend. I am reading but early in the weekend I was glued to the TV watching the Friday afternoon hit list as published by CNN. That disturbed me and I was unsettled on Friday. I made significant progress on System Collapse today, so perhaps the early part of the weekend was just a passing phase.
Non-Book Activities: The weather improved greatly today. I went out to the car port this afternoon and opened another wardrobe box in hopes that it had my down comforter in it. No such luck, but I did find my folding wooden stepladder. I can use that. I will get the rest of the things out of the wardrobe box tomorrow and move on to the next one.

Food: leftover meatloaf and rice and leftover King Cake for desert. I didn't get any new bakgin done today. I wanted to make a chicken and carrot sheet pan meal, but didn't, so that will be my cooking duties for tomorrow.

Weekend summary:
Books read from: Darkness, Take My Hand by Dennis Lehane, The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien
Books finished: Darkness, Take My Hand
Pages read: 400-ish
I'm hopeful I will finally finish The Silmarillion - it's a slog, but taking it in small daily doses with the audiobook, I'm now just a few days away from finishing.
Non-reading activities: Does going to an estate sale & buying a box of books count?

Well I'm obviously in the right place because I devoured the Murderbot series last year and am enjoying reading The Alchemist with my ELL student.
But this weekend's stats:
Books read from: 3 - Autonomous and the two below
Books finished: 2 - White Nights by Ann Cleeves and The Dark by John McGahern
Time reading:
Fri: 1h
Sat: 4.75h
Sun: 8h
Snacks: chai, hot chocolate, tea
Thoughts: I wish I was a faster reader. I'm looking at my TBR pile as I write this.
Non-book activities: nothin' worth writing about
Total books finished: 2
Total read from: 3
Total time reading: 13.75h
Editing to add: if you look at the synopsis for The Dark it will promote a depiction of the book that makes me think the writer didn't read or understand what they read. Seems to be an issue in book descriptions ... not LT's fault, but who writes these?? Book jackets are supposed to entice not repel!

There is a big discussion going on right now in the bookworld regarding the use of author blurbs on the dust jackets of other books. Simon & Schuster has announced that they are going to stop using author blurbs starting in April 2025. Some readers like blurbs, and use them as helps in selecting books - some readers don't, finding them a waste of time and distracting.
