April CoverCAT: A Road on the cover

Street, path, lane, trail, highway, are all acceptable.

A search for book titles with “road” or one of the synonyms, will come up with some suitable covers. I found that by viewing my tbr collection in Covers, I was able to quickly identify a surprising number of covers with roads:

I hope to read The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith a doorstop of a book that has been languishing on the shelf for too long.

And I will put in a plug for Benjamin Black's The Secret Guests, which I think has an unfairly low LT rating. It's the first in a series about a Garda detective.

I will be reading I Never Knew Myself by Melanie Rachel, a Pride and Prejudice variation.

My copy of A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers has a road winding through the cover, so that's my plan!

I have a lot of roads in my TBR, so I’m going to need to think about which most strikes my fancy. A strong contender, though, is Suppose a Sentence by Brian Dillon:

I've read Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: The Road to Neverwinter by Jaleigh Johnson. I'm pretty sure that is a road they are walking down on the cover (my eyes are not that great on making out details).

I Never Knew Myself by Melanie Rachel ★★★½

Elizabeth Bennet is living a lie. She’s known since she was fifteen that she isn't truly a Bennet, but who is she? Are the people and places that appear in her dreams just a sign of her active imagination, or are they memories of her true family? Could the stories she'd told Jane when they were children not be stories at all? Fitzwilliam Darcy is reliving a nightmare. He hasn’t dreamed of “Ellie” Windham in years, but after meeting Elizabeth Bennet, he is reminded of the day little Ellie was kidnapped. And now he is left to wonder whether he is drawn to more than her fine eyes. When Darcy realizes that Elizabeth and Ellie might be one and the same, he is anxious to return her to the Windhams, and Elizabeth is no less eager to meet her family. But when the idyllic reunion she longed for goes awry, both Darcy and Elizabeth wonder whether it’s really possible to put a broken family back together again. Can Darcy help Elizabeth find her place in her first family so she can one day join him in his?

This Pride and Prejudice variation was a good read. The love story between Elizabeth and Darcy is true to form, yet we get a glimpse of what happens after the original book ends. Literary license is taken with characters to tell this story, yet it did not overly distract from the tale. I would rate it a 3.75 since the ending was rather quickly wrapped up instead of following the same pace set with most of the book. This book is currently available on Kindle Unlimited.

Sat down and read A Psalm for the Wild-Built cover to cover last night, and absolutely loved it. Full review written, but if you like any sort of speculative fiction, I absolutely recommend this one--I've already requested the sequel from the library!

I finished Suppose a Sentence by Brian Dillon (with cover shown in >10 Charon07:). It was pleasant, but not as delightful as I’d hoped.

I read another book with a road on the cover, A High Mortality of Doves by Kate Ellis.

My Diary from the Edge of the World



In a world where our myths, from genies and sasquatches to a literal edge of the world, are fact, spunky twelve-year-old Gracie and her family begin a road trip to try to escape the Dark Cloud following them — because a Dark Cloud takes souls away when they die.

This was a wonderful book. The characters were charming, the world was fascinating, and the messages about grief and love were heartwarming. I did cry reading this book, and I would definitely recommend it. Many thanks to RosetheReader for the recommendation!
