tags / a list of tags

I have been developing a lit of tags. So far there are 60 or so, and I see this easily doubling as we continue to determine which tags would be helpful for users to search the catalog. But how do users know what to search for, tag-wise? Would it make sense to somehow publish the list of tags, which will give the users ideas what to search for, rather than have them type in words that they come up with themselves? If so, where would it make sense to publish this list, connected with TinyCat? Or am I totally missing a feature here?
Thank you!

>1 HHDL-LLC: Hi there, great question! There are a few ways you can do this, so hopefully others will chime in with their favorites. My preference is to determine a variety of searches I imagine would interest my patrons, including tag-specific and genre-specific searches. An example search could be "tag: rare books" or "genre: fiction." I perform those searches, and perhaps even sort the results, then grab the URL from the search. I then name and include that link on my TinyCat homepage settings: https://www.librarycat.org/admin/settings/home.

If you display tags on your items in TinyCat, it's likely that your patrons will get a natural sense for the tags available to them as they actively use the catalog. They'll see what tags you've displayed, and will likely click them to narrow down their search or explore other search avenues.

I hope this is helpful! Let me know if you have any questions.

It doesn't help your TinyCat users, but you can see your list of tags in your LT catalogue. Click on "Tags" up at the top. From there you can edit tags and click to see what books you have given each tag to.

>3 MarthaJeanne: A great point! It might be a good point from which to brainstorm what links you want on your TinyCat homepage.

I started adding tags to our library books, but I found that many of the tag words I was using were already in the title of the book, which are already searchable. It seemed rather redundant. The only time tags would be necessary, in my opinion, would be when the title is vague or too general.

>5 WPC-HSV: That works! For some libraries, adding tags that function as more-specific genres or other categories can be very useful. For example, most of my TinyCat homepage links go to tag searches, under which I've organized and categorized books by topic, genre, region, etc. as my patrons might find useful.
