Head?

Was Dick's head pasted on after the rest of the picture was painted?

Is that Bo Derek and Robert Vaughn?

Explains the pasting-on of Dick's head (Beavis and Butthead laugh)

Dick is starkers while wrestling an alligator-snake. The scales are going to be scraping his meat and two veg -- might be a while before he can take advantage of the obligatory bimbo.

I like that at least her boobs are depicted as they would be if she's spent her whole life without benefit of a bra. Too many SFF covers have primitive women who've obviously had very firm implants.

She, Dick, and maybe the critter seem to be looking at the viewer, like "Quit staring, can we get a little help here?!"

(Aw yeah, @EndofDiskOne: you know we love it when Blade arrives.)

>2 2wonderY: Ruth, are you unfamiliar with the works of "Jeffrey Lord"? About the rugged explorer (or whatever the hell he was) Richard Blade, fondly known to the old GSS community as "Dick"?

All: is there anyone there who can explain it better than I can? @GSSex-noob, can you chime in please? Till then I'll do my best.

>6 2wonderY: The "Blade" books were about a fellow, Richard Blade, who keeps getting transported into "another dimension" for, er, research, which always involved a lot of nudity, a lot of violence, a lot of sex, some exotic monsters — basically, fun for all the family. Never having actually read any of them, that's as much as I know, and I know that only from various blog posts and whatever. But the covers are so gloriously cheesy that Dick was a favourite on the old GSS website: a new Dick cover was a red letter day.

"Jeffrey Lord" was of course a pseudonym, used by, among others, Manning Lee Stokes.

The woman seems more concerned with posing for the artist than with the fight right next to her. And the man seems at least momentarily distracted from it too.

It's like someone is there with a camera and said, "Say cheese!" The crocodile was the only one to smile.

I thought this looked familiar, so I looked it up on GSS. Would you believe this book got two different covers? It's a double Dick!

For anyone who hasn't noticed, the old stand is back in action. Here's this one on there: The Monster of the Maze.

Just FYI if you don't already know, clicking the "Richard Blade" tag yields lots more Dick.

>10 TorMented: I thought it looked familiar too. I am not any more impressed than I was 8 years ago. However, I'm pleased I didn't repeat any of my comments. Shame, they were better than I managed today. I liked my "dimensions" references.

Let's not forget the pervy mad scientist who was always greasing up Dick before trips to Dimension X.

I only read one very late Dick, which was a dimension which was WWII Europe but with dragons. And the woman was a brilliant scientist. Most disappointing.

There aren't any new PulpFiles and haven't been for years, but the Dick recaps are still as delightful as ever at https://pulpfiles.wordpress.com/

>7 haydninvienna: For some reason I initially read his last name as "Strokes"

Look more like a Monster of the Great Outdoors than of the Maze. And as @Adreasj said, the lady is likely to get whacked by the tail if she keeps just sitting there. Maybe the monster is made out of rubber and they're just posing for a photo?

(Come to think of it, maybe the whole thing is just one of those funfair photo opportunities where you stick your head through a hole in a picture...)

>12 GSSex-noob: I clicked the link provided by @haydninvienna. I had forgotten that once I sent in so many Blade covers that we had a Dick week, with tons of glorious comments, including yours. Ah, those were the days.

>14 TorMented: I'd forgotten that too. Glorious indeed! The one where poor Frazetta's head ended up on Dick's body was truly horrific. Dick always seems to have a different pasted-on head on each cover. And why was he also in the rainbow box?

>13 bam2001: I think you're right - this is one of those "pose for a picture" things, only instead of silly hats and glasses, one gets to pose with a rubber croc-o-gator and a blow-up doll....

A day with Dick on GSS is always a good one.
