My Ratings (revised, once again, as I continue the fruitless search for the perfect scale...)
5 stars = Perfect, for me
4.5 stars = Excellent read
4 stars = Good read
3.5 stars = Not a waste of time
3 stars = Some redeeming qualities, but I wish I’d read something else
2.5 stars = Didn’t work for me
2 stars = Why didn’t I DNF it?
(Anything below 2 stars is unlikely to be finished)

I've had a relatively busy few days - last Wednesday, we played trivia with our regular team members (came in 2nd!); Thursday, our friends Ed and Alice (IG Jersey-centric influencers in their spare time) invited us to a new restaurant, where the chef prepared a giant feast just for us, and we got to try whatever we wanted on the regular menu. It was insane and fun. There was salad, pasta, chicken, pizza (my favorite was the falafel pizza...), dessert, etc. We split all the leftovers, and Wayne and I got several meals out of our share. Friday was a quiet evening at home. Saturday, we went out for dinner after doing boring house stuff during the day. And yesterday, we went into the city for a concert and walkabout. This coming weekend is the only one in June where we have nothing on the calendar, which is rare for us. I expect to collapse for the month of July :)
Streaming stuff:
We started watching 'The Residence' which is good fun. We've only watched 2 episodes so far but will continue. We finished the 2nd season of 'The Diplomat' and HOO BOY! That finale... Can't wait for the next season. We also started something else that I can't recall at the moment. Garbage memory...*
Does anyone else watch Top Chef? I'm very annoyed with this season, which is billed as "Destination Canada" but they spent most of the time in Toronto, before having two episodes in Calgary, and the final rounds are going to be in Italy. I was expecting to see a lot more of Canada - like maybe at least one of the coasts?!?! So weird. At least the cooking has been high caliber and the chefs kind and supportive of each other...
Book stuff:
I'm up to date on my completed book commenting (see previous thread). My current read is The Geographer's Library, and on audio, I am planning to start Audition.
* ETA: I remembered! I was thinking of 'Murderbot!'

Katie, I enjoyed your review of Brideshead Revisited on your previous thread. I wondered if Jeremy Irons would be the reader. The TV series also includes Charles Ryder's thoughts in narrative passages which he also does. His narration and the theme song are iconic and unforgettable. And yes I know you intend to watch, I'm just giving you a nudge.

Happy New Thread, Katie. I had a good time with "The Residence". Enjoy. I never did start "The Diplomat". I just finished 'Your Friends & Neighbors", which I loved. Jon Hamm is terrific. Not far into "Murderbot" but I am liking it.

Happy New Thread, Katie. I am going to watch the last episode of Department Q on netflix a little later. I read several of his books, and I think the books were better. The first episode was quite slow, and it's a dark show, but it's picking up and it had held my interest.

Happy new one, Katie. I love the "favorite of the month" in your list of books read. I'm also astounded and exhausted to see how much you're reading this year. I haven't looked at previous threads but it seems to me like you're reading a lot more than usual this year -- right?
Your social life sounds wonderful too. Keep it up and please keep reporting because it's a lot of fun to follow.

It's another beautiful day here, the downside of which is all the landscapers are out, so it's quite noisy!
Typical day for me - laundry, tidying, organizing, reading, puzzling. I'm making lemon-dill chicken and sauteed veg for dinner. Last night's dinner was *very* good - a new-to-me recipe for Firecracker Chicken Stir Fry, which I served over brown rice. I've finally found a method for cooking brown rice that works well - hallelujah! (https://cookieandkate.com/perfect-brown-rice-recipe/).
No viewing last night. I haven't started a new audio yet (maybe today?), but my print book is really good - The Geographer's Library. It's been on my shelf since 2008 and I have no memory of how it got there :-P

Have you ever tried TJ's frozen brown rice? You just nuke a little packet and out comes a nice portion for two of perfect brown rice. I'm totally hooked and so glad not to have to deal with cooking from scratch (and cleaning the pan afterwards).
I vaguely remember reading The Geographer's Library many years ago and liking it. (Hubby is a geographer so I think that's why I was drawn to it to begin with)

I get rice from our local dry goods refillery - I bring my own container and fill it from a dispenser at the store. I've been trying to buy more from there to cut down on my packaging/waste footprint.

>24 katiekrug: Something occurred to me about y'all's lot... it's on a creek that has rocky boundaries right? Permaybehaps you could toss some samphire seeds into the rocky bits to see if they grow and then harvest the yummy stems next year? Or watercress! They'd also help reduce flood erosion.
I'm itching to garden and of course can't so here I am spit balling at you....

Have a good weekend, Katie. I'm sure your new thread will soon fill with tasty and nourishing morsels, churned to the surface by your deep dives into the books. I'm getting a tune-up at the local hospital's Cardio Cantina tomorrow; hope to emerge at the day's end with renewed vigor and re-energized reading.

Let's see - what's been going on...
On Wednesday, I took Nuala to the vet for her annual check-up and some booster shots. She was a Very Good Girl (of course) and got cheese from both the tech and the doctor (this after the doctor said she should lose a pound or two, LOL). That evening, we came in first at trivia by one point. I stood my ground on one of the last questions that my team wanted to answer one way but I knew was incorrect because Heathrow has landing restrictions during certain hours, so there :)
Thursday was Maribel day, so I took care of some "desk work" and then futzed around most of the day before picking up Nuala from day care.
Friday, I met some friends in the afternoon to go bowling. It was great fun, and I wasn't as terrible as I expected. We are going to make this a regular thing on Fridays for the summer. I even got a bowler name - Turkiki - and we are going to get personalized shirts with our team name (The Gutter Slutz) on the back. So classy!
The weekend was uneventful, though I did have to call Amtrak on Sunday when TW discovered they had sent him an email A MONTH AGO that our train to DC this coming Friday was cancelled and we needed to re-book. Thankfully, it was easy to do and we just have to leave an hour earlier - no big deal.
This week will be a little busy - TW is going into the city to meet some colleagues for a work-together day at a co-working space, so I'll need to play chauffeur to and from the train station. I'm volunteering Thursday afternoon, and then Friday morning we leave on the aforementioned trip - just a long weekend (coming back Monday) to the in-laws for my SIL's birthday.
What's been cooking:
I made rice and beans with andouille one night; The Wayne made "marry me chicken" on Saturday. Tonight is chicken tacos with Mexican slaw, and tomorrow is Korean BBQ-style meatballs from the NY Times.
What's been streaming:
Top Chef, The Residence, Murderbot, tennis. I was glad to see Coco Gauff win on Saturday; I turned the men's final on in the 5th set, because it was so close and was very pleased Alcaraz won because Sinner is boring as hell. But it was a great match from both of them.
Books:
I finished The Geographer's Library and The Motel Life and owe some comments on both. I started listening to Audition but decided it was just going to annoy me, so I switched to The House at the Edge of the World, which is not annoying so far. In print, I'm reading Maphead and A River Town.
THE END.

>37 katiekrug: The trains are all a mess this week because all of the military equipment for the 'parade' this weekend has to be brought in by train since the roads are not built for it. It's almost like this is a bad idea! Hopefully your trip goes smoothly nonetheless.

>39 katiekrug: Yes, Saturday at 6pm. I thought it was going to be in the morning and made plans to be out in the suburbs but turns out its in the evening and I will, in fact, be home at my apartment that overlooks the parade route. Ick. Maybe I'll take some Nyquil at 5pm and wake up on Sunday.

I just KNEW you were my people! I haven't bowled since March of 2020, when COVID shut everything down, and even before that I was sadly contemplating giving up my league (our team was the Looney Koons), as I had a lot of sciatic pain. I will now happily envision you carrying on the tradition. BTW, you need a logo for that name. This was ours

Yesterday I voted in our primary election. We are having a somewhat contentious town council race - I supported the non-party-machine Dems, one of whom appears to have won. We also have a Governor's race this year and a crowded Dem field. I voted for my current Congresswoman (the one who ate bagels at my house), though TW did not (ooh, a house divided!). Anyway, my candidate won, so take that, The Wayne!
Speaking of whom... he's in the city today, meeting up with some colleagues at a co-working space, so I have the house ALL TO MYSELF. This is very exciting. I will either blast music and get some chores done, or do absolutely nothing at all. Maybe get a pedicure? But I hate to leave the house when it is ALL MINE. We'll see. Trivia tonight. TW has to make his own way home from the train :)
The recipe I made last night was most excellent so I am providing a (gift) link to it: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1019763-korean-bbq-style-meatballs?unlocked_....
I made a dipping sauce to go with it (black vinegar, tamari, ginger, and honey - all to taste) and it was great! This is a definite keeper. I served it with brown rice, and it was very satisfying.
I'm still reading/listening to the same books, so no update there.
ETA: NOOOOOO! TW just texted to say someone canceled on meeting this morning, and the other two might not bother in that case, so he might be coming home.

>65 RebaRelishesReading: - Get you some black vinegar, Reba! Any Asian market will have it. We use Koon Chun brand, but there are others.
From Bon Appetit: "Many vinegars are used to cut through fat, to add sharp counterbalance to oil in a dressing, or to amp up the sour notes in a complex sauce. But black vinegar is far more than just a blade of acid. With hints of licorice and malt held together by a distinct umami earthiness that permeates the whole condiment, it’s transformative, providing both acidity and complexity to round out a dish."
We always use it when we make any kind of Asian dish.

Propbably my last check-in for a bit, as I have a volunteer shift this afternoon, chores to do afterwards to get ready to go out of town, and then leaving tomorrow morning through Monday afternoon. I'll probably lurk on some threads while I'm gone, but I'm not planning to bring my laptop with me...
We came in 2nd at trivia last night - missed out on 1st by just a couple of points. Ah well. So it goes. Nothing much else happened yesterday - I was supremely lazy until I had to shower and put on real clothes and pick up TW from the train and go straight to the pub.
No new update on reading either... But the train travel should allow me to get some good reading in. I plan to finish A River Town and start All Fours, which I'm not super enthused about, but maybe I'll like it more than I expect to?

I went bowling yesterday, and I actually won one of the games, with a sterling score of 95, LOL. And my form is so good, I managed to pull a muscle in my butt cheek. Good times! I was pretty tired all day, as I'd slept poorly, so we ordered Chinese for dinner and vegged, and I went to bed a little early. Had a great sleep and woke up refreshed and full of energy. Today, we're going to a biergarten to watch a NY Liberty (WNBA) game with friends. They are big fans of the Liberty, and I am a big fan of German food, so win-win :) Not sure what else we'll get up to this weekend - it's gotten a bit cool and looks to be drizzly all weekend, so maybe just hermiting is in order...

Happy new week! Still grey and damp here. I don't like the sun usually but I wouldn't mind catching a glimpse of it right about now...
I'll shortly be heading out to the grocery store and then have some admin-y stuff to do this afternoon. Ho hum. Dinner tonight is spaghetti with a meat sauce - not very interesting but I'm trying to use up stuff in the freezer rather than letting it languish and ultimately throwing it out :-P
Books:
I *finally* finished A River Town yesterday, and started All Fours for book club (meeting on Thursday). I have been really bad about prioritizing puzzling/audiobooking, so I took the game I was playing incessantly off my computer and will hit "restart" by DNFing the audio I had going (The House at the Edge of the World) which was okay but not super compelling and starting something fresh. Probably Mansfield Park, since my hold on the audio read by Juliet Stevenson just came in...

Juliet Stevenson is a great reader for Jane Austen. I loved her narration so much I added all of the Austen books read by her to my personal collection.

> A while back I read a series written by Thomas Keneally and his daughter Meg Keneally. set in a penal colony in New South Wales. I think there were 4 or 5 books about the protagonist Montserrat, who was a British gentleman convicted of impersonating a barrister. They were all great, and I've been hoping for another installment.
103katiekrug
>102 vivians: - I remember hearing a bit about that series, Vivian, but I never came across it. I have 4 or 5 other books by Keneally in my stacks. I remeber Daughters of Mars getting a lot of love here several years ago, so that might be the next one by him I pick up.

>102 vivians: One of my favorite Kelleally's is The Playmaker about convicts in colonial Australia trying to put on a play.
Interesting that LT pops up Our Country's Good the play based on the book that was being done by everyone a few years ago
Gossip from the Forest is another good one. When they had that movie 1918 a few year back they flash forwarded to the talks in the railway car that ended World War I

Happy mid-week! STILL grey and damp here, but we are headed for a significant warm-up over hte next several days - ugh.
Yesterday, I spent some time shopping around for car insurance, as our premium went up AGAIN. I did realize our current policy is based on the national average of 12K miles per year, and we average about half that. So I'm going to contact our current insurer and get that adjusted, along with the primary deductible, and see if that puts it in a more reasonable place. I resent spending over $300/month for two very responsible people to drive one car!
Anyway, today I have errands to run, including picking up something to bring to book club tomorrow, as I won't have time to make anything. I also need to tidy up for Maribel's cleaning tomorrow. We are playing trivia tonight.
Wayne has tomorrow off for Juneteenth, and while he'll work part of it because he's him, we are going to meet some friends for bowling in the afternoon, which should be fun. And I'll follow that up with book club, so a rather social Thursday! And then I'll bowl again Friday with the Gutter Slutz. Sunday, we are going to a Yankees game with friends. It's supposed to be in the 90s. Sigh.
Not much viewing going on, but we did finish 'The Residence' last night, which was fun but could have been shorter. Eight episodes was too much, I think, and the end was rather ponderous. I did like how they included real stuff about the WH residence and the staff who work there - like the generations of one family who have been there for decades. The series was "based" (probably more accurate to say "inspired by") on a nonfiction book about the house and staff, and I think I have the audio version of it, so I might listen to that soon.
Books:
I'm making good progress with Mansfield Park on audio, and I'm almost done with All Fours. I've put Maphead on the back burner to make sure I finish AF in time for book club, but I'll pick that up again as soon as I'm done with AF. I think I've got my reading groove back :)

It's going to be 90F here today and of course our a/c won't turn on. TW discovered there is no voltage coming from the thermostat (or something like that). He may be able to fix it (he has a degree in electrical engineering after all!) but says he needs coffee first.
We came in first at trivia last night - woot!
Maribel will be here shortly and then TW and I are going bowling this afternoon (unless we have to stay home to wait for someone to come fix what TW couldn't...).
Book club tonight. I bought a chocolate chunk banana bread to bring. And a bottle of wine, of course.
Books:
I finished All Fours so am now focusing on finishing Maphead. Still having a good time with Mansfield Park on audio. Juliet Stevenson's narration is a delight, as usual.

So, as noted, book club was great last night. There were about 12 people there and 12 very smart, different takes on the book (All Fours). We talked about it for 2.5 hours! I'll say more when I write up my comments on the book for posting here.
Today, I am going to get a pedicure and meet my regular Friday afternoon bowling group. Yesterday was a lot of fun, and TW actually did really well. He's usually terrible. I don't know what got into him. I was the only one of the six of us not to break 100 at all - and we played 3 games! Oh well.
Dinner tonight will likely be out - in the summer, our town does a "Dinner Under the Stars" every Friday, where they close one of the streets that has a bunch of restaurants on it, and you can order food and drinks outside from any of them, and there's always entertainment of some sort. Tonight it's a swing band, and the weather is gorgeous, so we'll probably head down for that when TW finishes work.
No plans for Saturday. Sunday we are meeting friends for breakfast and then going with them to the Orioles-Yankees game. They are big Orioles fans. The projected high is 98F for Sunday, but our seats are in the shade, and I'm bringing my battery-powered neck fan thing because I'm a dork. Also, the game starts at 11:30am (weird), so while it will definitely be hot, we should be on our way home during the height of the heat (fingers crossed!).
Books:
I'll be finishing Maphead in the next day or so. I started reading Faithful yesterday but didn't get very far. And I've still got Mansfield Park going on audio.

I loved the "Department Q" series on Netflix. This was based on the first novel in the series The Keeper of Lost Causes, set in Denmark. I thought it was interesting that they moved it to Scotland for the show. It is a very good series; there are ten books in it, and I just finished the last one.

>127 richardderus: You're not alone, Richard. Even though I was a diehard Mets fan in 1969, as an 8 year old living in Jersey City who went to Shea Stadium several times that year, the Orioles became my favorite American League team after that year's World Series, and they are still my favorite AL team.
135richardderus
>134 kidzdoc: Only I went the other way...my role models were all NL fans back when I was coming up so I took that in...then the DH rule cemented my NL commitment. I still rejoice when any AL team loses. Very tribal of me.
136kidzdoc
>135 richardderus: That makes sense. I also hated the DH rule, which ruined the purity of the game for me after it was instituted. The Yankees were awful in the early 1970s, as you know, so it was easy for me to cheer for the Mets in the early 1970s, and then the Phillies after we moved to the Delaware Valley in 1974, right about the time that they became a relevant team. I went to a handful of Orioles games with friends in the late 1980s in old Memorial Stadium and Camden Yards, which rejuvenated my moderate level interest in them. We can't watch O's games on cable television, so I no longer follow them closely, although I do like it if they're playing well.

Yesterday was great. I bowled over 100 both games, so that was nice. In the evening, we didn't do "Dinner Under the Stars" but walked down to our local "restaurant row" and had Greek, sitting at a sidewalk table. Then we got ice cream on the walk home and stayed up too late playing cards.
Odds and ends to do today, including writing something about All Fours! Must. Get. That. Done. Oof, it's getting hot in here! We're having temps close to 100 for the next 3 days, with heat indexes hovering around 110. I left Texas for a (well, many) reason! I only have to go out today to do a grocery run and I will likely do that soonish, before the height of the heat settles in.
We had fun at the baseball game yesterday, especially since the temps stayed lower than predicted and there was cloud cover so no sun beating down. And the Yankees won :) Afterwards, TW and I had a quiet evening and we were both in bed before 10pm which is very unusual.

Today's forecasted high is 101F, with a heat index of 107. No thank you. Normally, I would just hermit inside, but I have a volunteer shift this afternoon, so out I must go. There is a chance they'll cancel food distribution today because of the heat. People line up outside the food pantry on an unshaded sidewalk, and they have occasionally canceled distribution out of health and safety concerns. But then people don't get food, and that's obviously a problem... I am glad I am not the person who has to make the decision.
For dinner last night, I grilled smoked sausage (inside) and served it sliced with a nice sharp cheddar, multigrain crackers, and a cucumber and red onion salad. It went down a treat, along with a chilled white wine. Tonight, we are having chicken caesar salad wraps.
Not much going on here, which is fine by me. I spent quality time with the books yesterday.
Earls Trip is a fun, easy read.
The Hopefuls is a good audio companion while I puzzle. The first page name-dropped the crappy bar right by the White House that I used to go to, so I knew the author had done her homework :)

>142 katiekrug: Ah yes! Hubby used to get those but I think he had a different name for them (or I just don't remember which is more likely).
Maybe time to visit the NW, Katie :). It's 72 outside right now.
Ken Jennings is writing books now, eh? Mapheads sounds fun. Hubby is a geographer so he would probably get a kick out of it too. On the list or my visit to White Oak Books tomorrow :)

Hi Katie! I think our heat wave has migrated your way. We've had much cooler temps today and yesterday and some rain, too. I have been watching news about the east coast heat dome and have been checking it against Nove Scotia temps - which have hovered in the 70s. I keep repeating this fact while looking meaningfully at my husband.
Thanks for the brown rice recipe - I'll save it, though that's one kind of rice I usually can do well. It seems to take a long time here at altitude, but usually turns out well. I think there will be a rice cooker in my future. My dad grew up in Hawaii so we always used a rice cooker growing up. My mom still has the one she received as a wedding gift in 1965. I spent my junior year in France and my roommate was from Hawaii, so we had to call our landlady to ask her how to make rice on the stovetop. But I've never had one for my entire adult life and recently I had to borrow Callia's to make rice for a retirement celebration (couldn't go home after school) and now I really want one.
Thanks also for the Korean BBQ meatballs recipe - looks amazing! I don't make meatballs very often and when I do they're usually Greek, but these look really good.
You got me with >49 katiekrug: and >150 katiekrug: - I LOVE maps so these should be right up my alley.

That's one sturdy rice cooker! I've had some success making rice in the InstantPot and I do.not.need another kitchen gadget. I'm glad to have found this winning formula for brown rice.
I hope you give the Korean meatballs a try at some point. And I hope those two books are winners for you if/when you get to them!

I am now caught up on reviews. Yay!
Today's big excitement will be taking the car in for its annual inspection. I don't anticipate any issues. I might treat myself to lunch afterwards. Trivia tonight.
Books:
Still reading Earls Trip, which is fun but I think I'm losing my love for historical romance. They always become a bit tiresome about halfway through...
My current audio is still The Hopefuls, which I am enjoying, mostly for the spot-on DC political stuff. The main character is actually kind of annoying.
ETA: In streaming, we watched the latest 'Murderbot' and then I watched an episode of 'Platonic' which is uneven for me, but I loved this particular episode ('My Wife's Boyfriend').

>160 ursula: - We liked it from the get-go, but we weren't huge Murderbot-ians from the books. We've listened to the first three, I think, and enjoyed them for passing the time on car trips, but that was about it. The Wayne wants to read them now, but I'm fine with the occasional listen and the show. I'm glad you've settled into it :)
>161 norabelle414: - I really love Rose Byrne, but Seth Rogen's character does make me cringe a lot (which is the point, I think). I didn't realize there was going to be another season!

I swear I'd think the car inspection thing was just a money-grab by the state, but it's free, so....? I am pretty sure the guy just changed out my sticker. I literally waited less than 3 minutes. I'm not complaining, and I take care of my car, so I know it's safe, but I do wonder if they do such a lackadaisical job with all of them!?!?
164bell7
>163 katiekrug: Huh how weird (and rather disconcerting if it is that quick with all of them...). My inspections usually take about 30 minutes plus whatever wait in line. Yours is free? Somehow if I knew that, I'd forgotten.
165katiekrug
>163 katiekrug: - I am choosing to believe that he saw that I keep my regular service up to date and decided that was good enough. Or he didn't know how to inspect a plug-in hybrid? LOL.
It's free here if you go to a state MVC facility, but you can't make appointments at most of them. Alternatively, you can pay a licensed private facility for the inspection, and have more flexibility in location and timing.

Glad your heat wave is better. Our high today is supposed to be 65 I think.
I married my rice cooker 😃. Hubby spent his first 11 years in Japan and brought a love of rice with it. His Japanese nanny taught him how to make rice on the stove top so I usually just leave that up to him. I copied the recipe for Korean meatballs and you've now reminded me to put that on the menu soon.

The heat dome has departed, hurrah! It's currently overcast and 76F. It's supposed to be even cooler tomorrow...
I had a good day yesterday, and in the evening, we won trivia again. There were only 4 teams but whatevs.
I was up bright and early at 6am today (I'm usually more of a 7:30-8:00 riser), and have completed all my puzzles and caffeinating. I've also dropped Nuala off at day care and am ready to start my day. I have a lot of admin stuff hanging over my head, including several phone calls to make, and I am going to try to just get them all done today, so I can have a no-guilt Friday. I also need to go to the grocery store today. Penne with sundried tomato pesto is tonight's dinner.
Books:
No change, but I should finish up Earls Trip today, so need to decide on my next read...

174katiekrug
>172 Familyhistorian: - Hi Meg! The bowling is fun. It's a nice change of pace from my usual schedule. It's just for the summer, because the chain of bowling alleys had a great deal on a summer pass, so we all bought one.
No, I've never had a regular migraine, thank goodness!

Happy Friday! I had a very productive day yesterday and knocked out several things on my To Do list that had been hanging over my head. Today, I plan to mostly relax. Several Gutter Slutz are out of town, so unless I can talk TW into playing hookey and going bowling with me, I likely won't go. I do need to confirm my dinner reservation for Saturday evening - my cousins are coming into the city with the ir families to go on a cruise and we are meeting for an early dinner before one half of them goes to a show. FInding a suitable place for 10 people in midtown that wasn't a tourist trap was fun (not), so I am jealously guarding my reservation and want to make sure it's still on the books since I made it ages ago!
Not sure what we are doing for dinner... Last night's penne with sun-dried tomato pesto was pretty good but next time I'll add lots more garlic and some Calabrian chilis, I think.
Books:
I finished Earls Trip and started Black Water. Still have The Hopefuls going on audio...

>174 katiekrug: Well I'll cross my fingers it's just a mood thing that might eventually pass because I really like swapping historical romance recs with you (we'll always have contemporary at least).
Crossing my fingers all is well with your dinner reservation and you have a great visit with family.

>170 katiekrug: Hi Katie!! Prompted by your comment I got out the recipe for Korean BBQ-Style Meatballs and we had them for dinner last night. I was never able to find black vinegar so I used some white balsamic vinegar I had on hand (along with the other ingredients you use) and that worked fine for the sauce. I served the meatballs on a bed or white rice and poured the sauce over the top. I grilled some asparagus to add some green and the whole dinner was a big success. Hubby kept saying "yum" throughout :) So thank you!! :)

>177 MickyFine: - It probably is just a mood thing, Micky. I should save them for when I want the predictability.
Reservation's good to go, but I just called them to scale it back, because my cousin Greg, his wife, and their younger son had their flight cancelled, so they won't be making it. :(

The Wayne and I had a most excellent day yesterday. He announced he was going to leave work around 2pm and we were going to "go have fun." We went bowling and had drinks and nibbles and played three games more than we had planned. I beat him 3 times - woot! Then we went to the wine store and went home and played cards on the deck for a couple of hours, before changing over to Ticket to Ride, which we played thrice. He beat me every time. Somewhere in there, I decided I wanted Chinese food, so we ordered that, and it was even better than usual. And then about 10:30pm, I announced we were watching Stripes, which we did, though I ended up falling asleep toward the end. Heh. It was a delightful time, though. I love just hanging out with him and talking and laughing. Happy day!
This morning, I woke up to a text from one of my cousins that his family's flight had been cancelled and they'd been re-booked for Sunday morning, so I won't see them, as they'll be going directly to the cruise terminal. Their timing is super tight, and I think I would have tried to get the airline to fly me in *somewhere* nearby today - even PHilly where it's an easy train ride to get to NYC. But no one asked me. *shrug* Wayne and I are still going to see my other cousin and his family, as they flew in last night, so it's not a total loss.
Books:
I should finish up Black Water today, but I'm not sure what I'll start. Still going with the same audio. No listening time yesterday or today (so far)...

Happy new week!
Dinner with my cousin and his family on Saturday was very nice, though I was really sad not to see my other cousin and his family. Luckily, their flight on Sunday morning was on time, and they were able to make their cruise.
Sunday was pretty quiet here - we watched the aUstrian Grand Prix, and then The Wayne did a bunch of outside chores. We went out for dinner and played cards when we got home. I'm on a 6-game winning streak against him (we play 500 Rummy) :)
Today, I've got errands to run and some house stuff to take care of. BLTs for dinner.
Books:
I finished the audio of The Hopefuls yesterday and will start Murder in an Irish Churchyard today. In print, I'm reading The Rich People Have Gone Away, which is good so far.

Worst of the month (not counting DNFs): The Hopefuls
I’m not really sure why I had such a relatively low number of completed reads this month. None of them were particularly long, but a few were slow-going, so that might explain it. I’m very pleased I’m continuing to read off my own shelves, and it hasn’t come to feel like a chore at all. July I am dedicating to my library wish lists, though. I’d like to clear some of the backlog of off those…
“Musts” for July:

The Secret Lives of Church Ladies for new book club I’ve started with a few friends

The BLTs were a hit last night, though we both agreed the bacon should have been a smidge crispier. The Wayne doesn't like raw tomato, but I removed all the goopy bits and sliced them very thinly, so he was fine. He also doesn't like mayonnaise, but I made a basil mayo to put on them, and he liked that a lot. Score!
I have a volunteer shift this afternoon, before which I will stop by the library to pick up a couple of holds. We are playing trivia tonight because tomorrow night is the big concert/fireworks show at the park near our house and we are going to go to that. Not sure if any of our teammates are coming tonight, or if they will just play as usual tomorrow.
Also, we played cards again last night and my win streak continues! TW is getting frustrated, LOL.
Books:
I'm really enjoying (seems like the wrong word for a pretty dark book) The Rich People Have Gone Away. I'm about halfway through it. I started Murder in an Irish Churchyard on audio yesterday, and it's decent company for puzzling.

We came in first at trivia, out of 22 teams, thankyouverymuch.
Today is all about picnic prep! I need to run to the store to get a few things, and then I'll be mostly in the kitchen, with a few side trips to the laundry room because I like to keep things fresh, LOL. We'll walk over to the park about 7:00 tonight to get a good spot (i.e. in the shade). The menu:
- grilled chicken
- herbed potato salad
- hard rolls
- ginger molasses cookies
- whatever our friend Alice is bringing, as she decided to come along
- chips and apples for snacking
- G&Ts
- wine
- water
We'll bring our books and maybe a pack of cards or simple table game to pass the time. There'll be a decent cover band playing (same one every year) and lots of dogs and kids running around. It's always good fun, and the fireworks at the end are pretty spectacular. I'm looking forward to the evening!

We had a very nice Fourth of July weekend, capped off by going to see the F1 movie last night. I had some issues with it, but it was fun enough. I had a doctor's appointment this morning and then got groceries. Chicken stir fry for dinner. Not much else planned for today, though I'll see if there are any Wimbledon matches on shortly. Tomorrow, I'm going into the city to meet Vivian and see the Jane Austen exhibit at the Morgan. Very much looking forward to that - both the exhibit and the company!
I am several reviews behind, so may try to knock out a few this afternoon.

Currently reading Long Man on my Kindle and listening to The Old Place.

Change of plans for today. Vivian very kindly gave me an out to postpone our visit to the JA exhibit, since the heat index today is supposed to be over 100F, and she knows I hate the heat and humidity. We will find another date.
So I have no other plans for today, though I do need to figure something out for dinner...
Books:
I DNF'd Long Man because it was boring. In its place, I started Stillwater, which is also historical fiction and grabbed me right from the start. Still listening to The Old Place on audio.

It's Wednesday. Yesterday was gross weather-wise, but we managed to miss the worst of the storms in the evening while still benefiting from the lowering of temps and humidity. I made a new-to-us recipe for dinner and it was a big hit. Gift link: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1023125-keema-shimla-mirch-ground-chicken-wi...
It was really easy and delicious. Definitely going into the rotation...
Today, I have some errands to run, once The Wayne gets back from his dentist appointment. I don't think I've mentioned that Nuala has been nursing a sore leg, poor doggy. This happens occasionally when she gets a little too enthusiastic in her zoomies in the yard, usually with TW egging her on. She seems to be much better today, but I might cancel her day care reservation for tomorrow to ensure she doesn't overdo it. Playing trivia tonight.
Books:
Stillwater is an absolute delight. I'm a little over halfway through and it should be at least a 4.5 star read, unless something happens to annoy me. I might finish the audio of The Old Place today - depends how much tennis I watch...

Ok, I think I responded to everyone :)
As noted, I am feeling better but not 100%. The biggest issue is that I'm not sleeping well, so I have very little energy, which is annoying. I was a slug pretty much all weekend... IT didn't help that I wasn't feeling great on Friday but made myself keep a date with my BFF to visit the Frick Collection, which has recently re-opened after a major renovation. It was hot and sticky in the city, but most of the walking from the subway and then to lunch after the museum was in Central Park, so there was some shade. We had a nice time, but it wore me out. I spent a lot of time in front of the TV this weekend - watched Wimbledon, all of the series 'Four Seasons' on Netflix (meh), half of the new season of 'The Bear,' started the new season of 'The Gilded Age' and started (with TW) the new season of 'Quarterback.' I think there was some other stuff, too, but I can't remember.
I'm on my own this week, as TW is at an off-site with his company (it's just in Brooklyn, but he's spending the week there rather than commuting back and forth). I had big plans to tackle some house projects, but we'll see how my energy holds up.
Books:
I finished Stillwater and started The Seven Year Slip for book club this week, but I didn't love it so put it aside. In its place, I read The Secret Lives of Church Ladies for my other book club next week. It was very good. I've not started Meet Me in the Margins, which is a light read. On audio, I'm listening to Run for the Hills.

Hopefully this sparks me to read even more books by him. I decided to give "Shrinking" another try and we are both enjoying it. Glad I did this. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood the first time around and stopped after 2 eps.

>275 BLBera: - I actually thought of you while I was reading Stillwater, Beth, thanks to the Minnesota connection. It was a wonderful read; I hope you get to it soon.
>276 lauralkeet: - I also like comparing notes with you about it, Laura, so I probably will dip in and out. Thanks for letting me know it's starting soon!
>277 bell7: - Thanks for the good wishes, Mary!
>278 msf59: - HIya, Mark! Yep, I'm a Trevor fan, though I haven't read much of him. What I have, I've liked a lot :)
'Shrinking' hasn't called to me - glad you're enjoying it!

I was very glad to see the back of Monday. It was a terrible, horrible, no good, awful day!
1) I wasn't feeling great to begin with.
2) Really felt like poo by mid-morning.
3) TW texts to let me know he forgot to bring his meds; I think frantically how to get them to him without having to traipse into the city when it's disgustingly hot and humid, storms are on the way, and I'm sick.
4) Drive meds to our friend who was WFH yesterday but normally works in downtown Manhattan; he agreed to meet Wayne this morning to hand them over. Crisis averted.
5) Try to nap but can't. Ugh.
6) TW sends me alarmist texts about the expected storms and rain and flood warnings. Double ugh.
7) Spend time (remember, I'm sick!) outside deploying hoses from the auxiliary pumps in the basement to the storm drain in the street in case the basement floods.
8) Manage to lock myself out of the house.
9) Cry.
10) Remember our firends A&E have a key to our house from taking care of Leonard and THANKFULLY I do have my phone. Burst into tears when they arrive, driving through the heavy rain, with my key.
11) Veg in front of the television with rainbow sherbet, which I can't taste BECAUSE I'M SICK, and wait for the house to flood.
12) House does not flood. Go to bed, where it takes me 2+ hours of tossing and turning to fall asleep.
Hope today is better!
I'm skipping trivia this week, and I'm supposed to go to a dinner with TW's work tomorrow but I'm going to bail because dear God, I am so tired. I may bail on book club Thursday night, too. We'll see.

Well I'm glad your house didn't flood!! I'm sorry you had a bad day.

>280 katiekrug: Oh, Katie....so mean of the Universe to dump on you like that! Richard has already sent word to the goddesses, so you should do better now. I'll just nod in their direction with a pointed expression, so they don't forget. (I think a lot of people had a bad day yesterday, so maybe the weather gods need a stern word as well.)
284lauralkeet
I thought of you when I read about the floods up your way Katie, and about TW being in the city with the 1 train flooding (even though I know he's in Brooklyn), and you being on your own and all that. It's enough to make ME cry, I can only imagine how stressful that was for you. I'm so glad you're both okay now and there was no flooding at home.
Today is bound to be better!

Uggghhh, I'm so sorry you had such a crappy Monday. It can only go up from here, right?
287charl08
>280 katiekrug: Revising my view of my crappy day upwards, as involved no floods, sickness or being locked out...
288AMQS
Oh that's a real Monday of a day. I am sorry and hope you feel better soon, and avoid flooding.

>280 katiekrug: That's just piling injury onto adversity, Katie. Surely things will get better. Take care of yourself.
I was amazed at how much the All Fours article relied on your input. You're a celebrity!

You all were very kind to indulge my pity party yesterday. Tuesday was a pretty decent day. I finally got my hair cut - went to a new place and it was pretty good, so I'll probably go back. I treated myself to a bowl of mac and cheese for dinner while watching TV and felt very indulgent... Last night, I got a decent night's sleep for the first time in almost a week, which was delightful. Since I'm feeling better, though not 100%, I toyed with the idea of going into the city for TW's work thing, but we're under a heat advisory, and the journey in would take well over an hour and involve two waits on stupidly hot subway platforms, and I just don't think I'm up for it. I'm bummed because they are going to an excellent-looking Sicilian restaurant and then seeing a set at a jazz club :(
Viewing:
I finished up season 4 of 'The Bear.' I liked it better than s3 but I think I'm over it. Or I'm over Carmy. I like all the others :)
I'm caught up on 'The Gilded Age.' I forgot it's not released all at once, so I have to wait for this week's installment.
For my mindless 30 minute show, I'm watching 'Running Point.' It's mildly amusing in parts. And yay, sports!
For my next "serious" show, I think I'll star 'Adolescence,' which looks super dark but got excellent reviews.
Books:
I'm almost done with Meet Me in the Margins, which has been delightful and a perfect read for a foggy head. I've listened to none of my audio the past several days, but hope to change that today.
I also owe 3 reviews for completed books. Maybe that will happen today?

I'm sorry to hear your Monday was miserable but glad to hear things have improved since then. Hope you're keeping cool today and not having too much FOMO for TW's business dinner.

>296 katiekrug: Oooh, that one looks good. I'll add it to the List.
Glad to hear things are better after your rotten Monday. I did hear there was pretty extensive flooding in NJ and am glad to hear your house did not flood.

Very glad to hear that you dodged the latest flood bullet. The videos were really frightening.

The flooding was just a little south of us - too close for comfort, but what can you do?

The Wayne is coming home today - hooray! He's hoping to leave around lunch time, so might be able to join me and the gang for bowling. I expect we'll go out for dinner or order in. I have no plans to cook. And he can catch me up on all the fun he had (and work he did...).
I had book club last night to discuss The Seven Year Slip, which I did not finish and nothing in the conversation made me regret that. But it was nice to be out and peopling after a very solitary week.
No major plans for the weekend...
On Wednesday night, I binged all 4 episodes of 'Adolescence,' which was very well done and disturbing. Anyone seen it?
Books:
I am almost finished with Stories from the Tenants Downstairs, and I have a couple of hours left in Run for the Hills, which has been great. The audio narrator (Marin Ireland) is *excellent.*

Sounds like you're feeling better. TW coming home will help too I'm sure. Hope you have a fun evening.

Too close for comfort indeed. So sorry but glad it missed your house. Hope you got a wonderful dinner along with The Wayne's homecoming.

I'm glad the Wayne is home and that you are feeling better, Katie. I always miss Dave when he goes away - which is not often - except for the day.

Sorry for your Monday, Katie. It sounds like the rest of the week was better. Stillwater goes on my "read soon" shelf. Great comments.
