How does one change the description of an item?
I would prefer to have the description, be what is on the back of the book, or the fly leaf of the book or DVD unless it's not a description of the item. Some of the descriptions that are uploaded read more like a promo for the author and not what the item is about. To be able to change a description to me is better than having ask for more server space so one could have two photographs per item, one being the cover and the other being the back or fly leaf of an item.
I've tried looking for the area to change, but haven't found it. I did find where you could vote on a description.
Thank you

The only thing you can do is go into the Librarything work, go into the Description section in the left menu, then upvote for the description you like or downvote the description you don't like. At this time, there is no way to edit or enter a description.

Aside from up and downvoting library descriptions, you can use the comments field for your own description. I believe it's titled Local Notes when viewed in TinyCat, but can be renamed

I've tried to eradicate character set issues in my own catalogue, but that doesn't help with character set issues in Descriptions.
I.e. https://www.librarycat.org/lib/bnielsen/item/287664112 and the name Dsire :-)
But I prefer a good description with character set issues to a bad description without, so voting won't solve the problem.

>1 TrinityFellowshipChu: These are all good suggestions! Not too long ago, we instituted another option. Under your Detail Page settings (https://www.librarycat.org/admin/settings/detail), you can choose to replace the standard description from LibraryThing in your TinyCat with text you have entered to the Summary field, when present.
"Item Description
Use my custom item summary instead of the standard description. (Item summaries can be added or updated by editing your book on LibraryThing. If an item does not have a custom summary, the standard description will be used.)"
This will allow you to maintain your Local Notes section for other purposes.
Please let me know if you have any questions!

>3 SandraArdnas: Thank you, I've done that before but was hoping to get a better description out there.

>5 ZephCraven: Thank you. If I understand correctly that would then allow others to use it also.

>8 TrinityFellowshipChu: Not quite, no! The standard descriptions for "works" live in the "common knowledge" data. This summary is your own, belonging only to your item. Others might be able to see it or stumble across it somehow, though that seems unlikely to me.

Question - I have used the Summary field in librarything to add my own description of items yesterday, but none are showing in the tinycat records. as per:
""Item Description - Use my custom item summary instead of the standard description. (Item summaries can be added or updated by editing your book on LibraryThing. If an item does not have a custom summary, the standard description will be used.)"
Examples:
1. Be-ṭipul. ʻOnah sheniyah = In treatment
2. ARab labor the first complete season
3. Adam resurrected
4. La-redet meha-ʻets = up the wrong tree.
There are more, but these are a few from yesterday. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks
Karen

>11 yedlint: Hi Karen! I saw that the box the turn that setting on wasn't checked yet, under your Detail Page settings. I went ahead and clicked it for you and am now seeing descriptions from your Summary fields correctly in TinyCat! Let me know if you're still noticing any issues.
Very best,
Zeph
