I plan on reading Thursday - Sunday, with a little gardening and prep for volunteer work during the week thrown in. It'll be an apple pie Fourth of July here, but just our household, so fairly quiet. Unless the Husky decides otherwise ...

Books read from: My continuous reading book is Lucia in London by E. F. Benson book 2 in the Mapp & Lucia books. My computer book is Eating My Way Through Italy by Elizabeth Minchilli. I started and finished reading Children's Blizzard by David Laskin. I am listening to Burning Page by Genevieve Cogman.
Books finished: Children's Blizzard by David Laskin
Book Thoughts: Children's Blizzard was a very good book about the Blizzard of 1888. I loved all the meteorological and topographical detail about how and why the storm started. The author did a great job of drawing the reader into the story of the people's lives. I am not sure whether this is a survival story or a work of historical nonfiction, but the author wrote great narrative nonfiction and did an excellent job of explaining how and why the storm started, how and why it had such a devastating effect on the states of the upper midwest. He starts with the immigrants and tells the story of how and why each family came to the area where they settled and later in the story he explains how and why the topographical features of each of those settlements affected the outcome of their lives. The author also explains about the Homestead Act of 1862 and how that attracted immigrants to settle in areas that were inhospitable and probably shouldn't have been homesteaded.
Non-Book Activities: I am going to try to go to water aerobics tonight. Probably won't make it, but I have asperations.

A little update (it's just Friday morning here):
Books read from: In Dubious Battle and The Man Who Died Twice: A Thursday Murder Club Mystery
Books finished: nothin' yet but that's the plan! I need to recover some of the bookmarks ...
Time reading: ~3h
Thoughts: Lucked into the Thursday Murder Club book becoming available before anticipated - it's a popular series, so you have to wait for them - so of course I had to begin it right after getting the notice that it was my turn! It will be my fun listen this weekend, for sure.
Non-book activities: Spousal unit and I are slowly watching the Foundation series on AppleTV. I hadn't read the books, and he says the series is not faithful at all to what he remembers of the books. Anyways, a new Murderbot will be available tonight, so we'll watch with our son and I'll try to convince them to read the books. The TV series is okay, but not as fun as the books. Other than that, the spousal unit is doing the cooking today but I will make an apple pie. The flags are hung - I'd love to go see fireworks, but the guys are meh on the idea and the dog will probably be better off with company as one of my neighbors enjoys setting off firecrackers with his kids every 4th. Not that I'm complaining ... I like festivities, so maybe a firepit tonight! But how I envy you the music festival!!

Happy 4th of July!
Tie a yellow ribbon to bring back democracy.
Books:
Finished THE SHADOW BETWEEN US by C Mason - tragedy, damaged people, loss, grief, guilt, despair, healing, recovery. Set in Sequim, WA, a town l’ve been to.
Started THE FAMILY UPSTAIRS, by Lisa Jewel. Lately l’ve picked up half a dozen different books, then set them aside. I think l’m just looking for a great story. . .
Other:
Had a lunch-time family gathering at my sister’s. Burgers, fruit, ice cream. Bob made the potato salad and it was great.
Now l’m back home and ready to read but l still have to organize a picnic for our trip tomorrow.
Sunny & hot. 88F but feels warmer.

Feels like Sunday, but it's only Saturday - what a joy! Plenty to do today, not least of which is finish two books:
Books read from: In Dubious Battle - less than an hour to go, thank goodness, The Man Who Died Twice: A Thursday Murder Club Mystery
Books finished: still working on it ...
Time reading: maybe 4h?
Thoughts: Celebrating a family birthday today ... do I make a cake or journey to Whole Foods? Birthday boy doesn't care, so it'll be up to the recipe search gods to see if something lands in my lap...
Non-book activities: fire pit, a great meal, made the apple pie, and a little volunteer work. Having a most relaxing holiday weekend!

Friday report
Books read from: My continuous reading book is Lucia in London by E. F. Benson, book 2 in the Mapp & Lucia books. My computer book is Eating My Way Through Italy by Elizabeth Minchilli. I started reading Mattanza: Love and Death in the Sea of Sicily by Theresa Maggio. I am listening to Burning Page by Genevieve Cogman.
Books finished: Children's Blizzard by David Laskin
Book Thoughts: I had a great reading day yesterday. I read half of the new book I started for the nonfiction challenge. It is Mattanza and is about the demise of the tuna fishing industry in the Mediterranean. Specifically, the water adjacent to Sicily and its neighboring small islands. So far it has been a great mix of travel writing and of documentation on a dying way of the fishing life in these small islands.
Non-Book Activities: I won't get as much reading done today. I have my knitting class today and when I get home I need to pit cherries.

Saturday evening
No reading progress today but some GREAT music. Arrived at the Blue Ridge Music Center in time for a nice picnic before the afternoon music. Now we’re back for the evening show with the Steep Canyon Rangers. It’s outside, lovely weather, a cool breeze.
Dinner was BBQ at the Galax Smokehouse.

Today turned out to be more of board gaming day than a reading day and I think tomorrow will be more of the same.

A Sunday morning update.
Books read from: Robot Visions and What I Talk about When I Talk about Running: A Memoir
Books finished:In Dubious Battle and The Man Who Died Twice: A Thursday Murder Club Mystery
Time reading: 5h? I'm guessing.
Birthday cake decision: I made SugarGeek's Strawberry Cake as cupcakes but sliced in half to add the strawberry reduction and buttercream to the interior as well and skipped the extra flavoring and food color (both unnecessary). Successful enough. Now to avoid picking at the remaining ones or the apple pie...
Thoughts: I'm enjoying listening to the Murakami memoir one chapter at a time. It seems to me he's describing something he's tapped, possibly "motivation".
Non-book activities: It has been the first really terrific weather weekend we've had this year, as in all of 2025. This morning was perfect and the dog and I enjoyed coffee on the deck watching the world wake-up.

I am also curious about Isola. There is lots of good buzz about it here on LT and My public library just got it in the new book shelf, so I am thinking about reading it.

Weekend Wrapup
Books read from: My continuous reading book is Lucia in London by E. F. Benson, book 2 in the Mapp & Lucia books. My computer book is Eating My Way Through Italy by Elizabeth Minchilli. I almost finished with reading Mattanza: Love and Death in the Sea of Sicily by Theresa Maggio. I finsihed listening to Burning Page by Genevieve Cogman and started Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield.
Books finished: Children's Blizzard by David Laskin. Burning Page by Genevieve Cogman
Book Thoughts: I had a great reading weekend. I have almost finished one book and should get it done today. It has been a perfect staycation travel book. It has the right combination of travel experiences and memoir that I love. It also has lots in it about Tuna that I didn't know. The Mattanza is the ancient way of catching tuna that is practiced in Sicily and its small adjoining islands. The method used to catch the tuna is much the same as it has been since the Middle Ages. I was interested in this book because we have literally fished the oceans dry and some scientists say that the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna should be placted on the endangered species list. As it is, commercial fishing is heavily restricted in both US and European waters. This fishing is allowed because it doesn't catch as many fish as does the big factory fishing that is done all over the world. I got some listening time in as well and finished one book and started another. Burning Page was another steampunk fantasy joy ride. It is book 3 in the series so now I will have to try to find book 4.
Non-Book Activities: I did a whole lot of cooking this weekend and will be cooking and preparing stuff all week long. Next week will be the big Strnad Reunion and there will be lots of things to do. I am going to rest up today.

Weekend summary:
Books read from The Late Child by Larry McMurtry, Dance Hall of the Dead by Tony Hillerman, Pacific Crucible by Ian W. Toll
Books finished: The Late Child
Pages read: 400-ish
The Late Child might be my least favorite McMurtry novel. Hillerman's Leaphorn & Chee series has been excellent so far. I spent a good chunk of the last week watching the webcast of the international convention of the Barbershop Harmony Society, which featured 64 competing quartets and 39 choruses. It's a hobby I've been involved with for 35 years now. A quartet from Sweden won the gold medal & the Vocal Majority chorus from Dallas Texas won the chorus gold. It's always a pleasure to see & hear the creative products of so much talent.

Weekend wrap-up: what a lovely, restful weekend!
Books read from and as yet unfinished:
- Long Day For Ray: violent, fast-action, and funny at parts. I still have the lyric "causing mass destruction" running through my head every time I pick it up.
- Robot Visions: enjoyable collection of short stories/novellas
- The Happy Housekeeper's Guide to Homicide: my mom recommended, so I picked this up as a gentle before-bedtime type read. Not that my mother is gentle ... My spousal unit refers to her as Sheila di Medici... huh. Wonder if that's why she reads so many murder mysteries? Maybe he's onto something ...
- What I Talk about When I Talk about Running: A Memoir: I enjoy memoirs, and artists talking about their process, even indirectly, is always interesting. I think this is about motivation, but maybe that was just the chapter I listened to while walking with the dog. It's inspirational yet very real, and an interesting life to peek into.
- Unnatural Death: A Scarpetta Novel (Kay Scarpetta): you can skip this one. I'll finish it, but not rushing to get to it.
Books finished: In Dubious Battle and The Man Who Died Twice: A Thursday Murder Club Mystery
Time reading: averaged about 4h/day

Weekend wrap-up
Books:
I am liking my audio book -
BENEVOLENT SOCIETY OF ILL-MANNERED LADIES
Just started ISOLA and think l’m going to love it.
Finished no books due to being away for a couple days and some excitement from tropical storm Chantal. We got home from the mtns just before it all started - torrential rain, flash floods, severe thunderstorms, tornado warning, and advisory to only travel if you had to move to higher ground. Internet has been out here and all around us since this morning.
Dining:
Great Indian lunch out at my new favorite restaurant.
Other:
TV - MURDERBOT episode and a very dark, tragic British crime drama, RIVER.
Weather now is hot & sunny.
Flood warning still in effect,
plus a heat advisory.
