Hello my fellow readers. Happy Friday!

Books:
THE STORY SHE LEFT BEHIND
DEVIL’S CUB
my new audio book is
THE EYES AND THE IMPOSSIBLE

I plan to lie low and read for much of the weekend. I’m keeping my sister’s cats while she’s away. We’re invited to a cook-out at my niece’s one evening. I will have to get out early if l want to walk; it is VERY hot here. My porch project proceeds slowly. Awaiting one more builder estimate..

I just baked a big batch of granola so lunch was a fresh peach topped with granola and milk.

94F, feels like 98.
Extreme heat warning in effect.

I read a grand total of 20 minutes from Un Lun Dun yesterday and other than listening to Four Souls, that was the entirety of my reading. My weekend readathon is not off to a good start, lol.

Saturday report
Books read from: My continuous reading book is now Miss Mapp because I finished Lucia in London by E. F. Benson. My computer book is still Eating My Way Through Italy by Elizabeth Minchilli. I am reading Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano. almost done with How to Share an Egg: A True Story of Hunger, Love, and Plenty by Bonny Reichert. I started A God in Every Stone by Kamila Shamsie. I am listening to Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield.

Books finished: How to Share an Egg by Bonny Reichert. A God in Every Stone by Kamila Shamsie

Book Thoughts: I finished reading A God in Every Stone this morning while eating breakfast. I am not sure what to think about this novel. I was engrossing and it sucked me in from the beginning. However, it also felt cluttered. There was so much going on in it that it as hard to figure out who the main characters were and what was the main topic. The author weaved so many different threads into the novel that I think some of the important ones got lost in all the different stories. However, I am sure that I will read another of her novels very soon, as this is a talented author who is mining the far corners of multiple histories and therefore exposing many of us to some vastly different cultures in the process.

Non-Book Activities: I will be doing lots of cooking today. The garden produce is really pouring it on and my refrigerator is full so I simply must cook. First up will be using up the last of the cauliflower in making a gratin.

My report for yesterday is not much better than for Friday, although I was able to finish listening to Four Souls and finish reading Un Lun Dun. Total reading time was a whole 27 minutes + listening to the audiobook. *sigh* I am in a real book funk right now.

Sunday report
Books read from: My continuous reading book is now Miss Mapp because I finished by E. F. Benson. My computer book is still Eating My Way Through Italy byElizabeth Minchilli. I am reading Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano. Angsana Tree Mystery by Ovidia Yu. I am listening to Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield.

Books finished: How to Share an Egg by Bonny Reichert. A God in Every Stone by Kamila Shamsie

Book Thoughts: I started reading Angsana Tree Mystery the eighth book in the Su Lin mystery series. I was introduced to this series by Chatterbox a number of years ago, and she was right; these books are delightful mysteries to read. They are half way between a cozy and a murder mystery. They are set in Singapore starting in 1936. This book is in 1947 just as Chinese New Year is beginning. The war is over and the British are trying to restore the Empire but India and Indonesia are beginning to rebel. There is lots of social history in these books and so much cultural history as well. They are easy to read but I find them very interesting.

Non-Book Activities: There was church this morning. Then I did a little reading and took a nap. I have all of my cooking done for the block party today, so I will find out what the neighbors think of a summer vegetable gratin. My guess is that they won't think too much of it because it doesn't have cheese, loads of butter, and or meat. I did watch part of an old PBS series about food and a dietitian said that we don't need to eat meat every day. She is correct and with the surfeit of veggies right now I don't see myself eating much of anything but veggies for the next few weeks.

Reading Time Today: 2 hours
Time Reading this weekend: 3 hours
Time listening:
Time posting:
Food: Pain au chocolate for breakfast. Cauliflower gratin for lunch.

Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 518
Total Time Reading since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 1600 hours since I started doing the weekend Read-A-Thon starting in April of 2020.

Weekend summary:

Books read from: Angels Flight by Michael Connelly, Pacific Crucible by Ian W. Toll, Class Clown by Dave Barry (sorry, it's a brand new book & apparently isn't in the touchstone inventory yet...)
Books finished: Angels Flight and Pacific Crucible
Pages read: 500-ish

Non-reading activities - we went to an estate sale on Saturday & picked up several books: Grand Opening, Staggerford, and The Love Hunter by Jon Hassler. Atonement by Ian McEwan, Strike Three, You're Dead by Richard Rosen, The Devil in the White City, and Islands in the Stream by Ernest Hemingway. All were paperbacks, except for the Hemingway - total cost $10. I do love a bargain.

Monday wrap-up

Books finished: How to Share an Egg by Bonny Reichert. A God in Every Stone by Kamila Shamsie.

Book Thoughts: I am really enjoying the latest Su Lin Mystery. There is so much post-WWII South Asian history in this series. British Colonial history that we American's don't know much about. This book is concerned with Singapore and Indonesia and the break with Great Britain. So much social history in a cozy mystery.

Non-Book Activities: Work this morning and took my knitting to enter in the county fair. I took four pieces including cowls, mittens, and two hats. Judging is tomorrow. There was very little baked goods, but it was early in the day.
