Erasmus’ In Praise of Folly

Earlier today, I purchased a copy of the Heritage Press edition of Erasmus’ In Praise of Folly. I looked up the Limited Editions Club edition and found that it seems to have the same problem as the LEC’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, that being the sheepskin binding (What on earth were they thinking?). Now, the HP edition actually sounds like an upgrade from the LEC edition (Netherlands printing, better binding, etc.). I can’t find any copyright or publication date in the Heritage Press edition. I also noticed that the HP edition used a different illustrator than the LEC edition. Can someone explain the differences and how they came to be?

Publication dates on HPs can be tricky due to reprints. If you have the accompanying Sandglass you can figure it out. HP editions did not always use the same illustrator. Also sometimes they started with the same illustrator and then switched in a later edition.

I bought my LEC edition a while back (2011) and it was both moderately priced and in very nice condition. I’d take it over the HP any day of the week (better printing and better paper. I like the binding on the LEC and don’t know what the HP looks like). On the other hand, HP editions are a great deal. Nicely made and they can usually be found for really low prices.

Django did a wonderful series on the Heritage Press. You could find most of them, including ‘In Praise of Folly’ by using the search field and searching for The Kid Brother.

Here’s a link to one of them. https://www.librarything.com/topic/241067#5814497

>1 Bibliophile-I: I did a pretty deep dive on this on my blog here (with some help from Django and other devotees): https://georgemacyimagery.wordpress.com/2017/07/30/heritage-press-moriae-encomiu...

I own both the HP and LEC editions and both of them are well worth acquiring. The LEC was designed by Macy himself and I like this design very much. Same with Ulysses which I will never find for an affordable price haha.

>7 Lukas1990:, the LEC editions that I see for sale on Abe look like they’re falling apart, unfortunately.
