The Impressionist Revolution 1988

This is a beautiful book for art lovers with excellent reproductions of almost 200 art works in one of the few Folio Society books in landscape format.

The impressionist period in France from about 1865 to 1885 was triggered when a painting by Monet of Le Havre that it did not look like the port was titled by the artist as “Impression : Sunrise”.

Impressionism avoided sharp edges in its figures and had its focus on capturing fleeting moments and the effects of light and atmosphere. Brush strokes were visible, the colours were vibrant, poses were natural and everyday life was a common subject. These paintings were often rejected by the fashionable Salon in Paris resulting in the formation of a Salon Refuse that competed with the original Salon.

Originally published by Opus Books in 1986, this book was reissued by the Folio Society in 1988 in an identical binding, differing only from the Opus edition with the FS logo on the spine and FS imprimatur on the title page.

The first half of the book is taken up with well written illustrated biographies of seven impressionist artists : Monet, Manet, Renoir, Degas, Sisley, Pissaro and Cezanne. Each biography is written by a different author. The second half of the book is a collection of 135 Major Works by the same seven impressionist artists, all being full page reproductions. The captions for these paintings are listed separately at the back of the book as is an index to all the works and artists.

The 272 page book is edited by Bruce Bernard who also wrote the introduction. There is a line drawn map of France and Paris at the back of the book locating places mentioned in the text and portrayed in the paintings. The endpapers are pale green and it is bound in dark green cloth with gilt spine titling and a colour printed cover label showing the small boat that Monet used as his studio. The plain green slipcase measures 25.5x29.4cm.

Thank you, Warwick, for this review: despite being published during my membership years, this book seems to have entirely passed me by. Enabled. Ordered.

>4 mr.philistine: While not FS, I highly recommend Tonge's Travels by The Old School Press as one of my favourite landscape books: https://www.theoldschoolpress.com/bookpages/TT.htm

It can still be found online at very reasonable prices.
