Why do you think McCaleb now feels like a stranger when he looks in the mirror, ‘someone beaten down and left fragile by life’?

I imagine his illness and being so close to dying had a profound effect on him. I also suspect having an organ transplant would leave a person questioning whether they’re a ‘different’ person from the one they were before.

He hasn’t totally healed from the transplant and that is making him feel weird about himself.

A part of someone inside you? I can see where he would feel different.

This seems to be a regular feeling for people who receive someone else’s heart. Must be a strange feeling.

He was feeling his usual strong and healthy self for years, then had a heart attack and ended up waiting a long time for a transplant. He got weak and debilitated. He then had the major surgery and has a healthy heart, but the recovery time is long and it takes a while to regain strength and stamina. That’s enough for anyone to think he’s a different person than he used to be.
