I would say today is the change of season for Kentucky. My air conditioner has been off for a couple of months, but I’ve had open windows and a fan upstairs coping with the under eaves heat build-up.
Today there was a very cool breeze flowing down the stairs from the open window at the top. Closed everything up.
It’s 60° here and overcast with welcome showers.

Back home in Kenya now where drought is the big problem. Crops are shrivelling and livestock is dying. We normally buy five litres of raw milk from our neighbour's smallholding every few days but they're struggling to provide even two litres at the moment as the cattle don't have enough water to drink. The drought is also attracting snakes to households in search of water. One of our friends stepped on a puff adder outside her kitchen the other evening, but fortunately it didn't bite her.

Difficult to find statistics and it is almost certainly under-reported. It's estimated that there are twenty to thirty thousand human fatalities per annum from snakebite in sub-Saharan Africa, but I can't find any statistics for domestic livestock except that a high proportion of animals which are bitten die.
Our own personal experience is limited. We've had one dog die after being bitten by an Egyptian cobra, while a second survived after treatment. In return our dogs have killed six cobras. Over the years I've encountered dozens of snakes, and in my younger less-enlightened days I killed quite a few, but I've never personally felt threated by one - their natural instinct is to escape rather than bite something which is obviously too big to eat. I believe a new antivenom is being developed which will be effective against the venom of many common African snakes, but who knows when or if that will ever find its way to poorer rural areas.

That counts me out. Afterward, one of the board members remarked to me she had estimated my age to be 60s or late 50s. I had been curious as to the perception of my age.

Here in the sunny South (Arkanas) we have 8 inches of snow/sleet mix. I see the temperature for tonight has been moved from a few degrees below 0 to 5. Daytime temp will be above freezing Tuesday but we have a full day of sun tomorrow so that will help the melt. The problem here is that we have steep hills that can be a big problem.
