It's a decently representative cover, from what I remember. The bug is Thranx, Human's major companions in space, and the snake is Flinx's flying, acid-spitting pet.

Say hello to my little friend(s).
Yeah, Darrell K Sweet usually gave the impression that he actually read the books he illustrated or at least got a detailed synopsis. He could have put a bit more effort into making the Thranx look like an intelligent alien rather than just a scaled up terrestrial bug, though. Perhaps give it some sort of hands like in this picture: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/91yZ4TpO9OL._SL1500_.jpg

Darrell, do or do not. There is no try. Here, you tried.
Agreed that the other cover is better.
This looks like "guy encounters large vermin on a hike", not "guy, his protective flying buddy bestie, and a colleague on a bike".
(soundtrack: the song "Spiders and Snakes".

(Guy, on an Australian hike. Points to giant bug. Asks "Is this normal?" Other guy fails to respond because flying snake has just gone for his face.)
