Small Spaces is a middle school horror novel. It all starts when eleven-year-old Ollie who is still struggling with the loss of her mother stumbles upon a crazed woman trying to throw a book into a river. But the next day Ollie has a field trip to that very same woman’s farm. As they are on the bus back, the bus breaks down. When the bus driver warns them, “Best get moving, at night they’ll come for the rest of you,” Ollie knows she can’t stay. So she goes into the woods with her friends Coco and Brian not far behind her... and the ever watching eyes of scarecrows on their backs. While in the woods, their entire class has been captured by “the Smiling Man” and turned into scarecrows. They hide in small spaces by night and make their way to “The Smiling Man” by day. To get out of the world behind the mist they must go to the middle of the corn maze before dawn... or they’ll all be trapped there forever, scarecrow or not.
