Folio New Year sale 2026

1adityadubey

Has anyone heard any news on potential new year sales this year? I haven’t seen anything on the group (apologies if I missed it) and was wondering if they’ve stopped doing those?

>1 adityadubey:
Usually starts first week of January, but the FS is unpredictable.
Added year to date for reference.

>1 adityadubey: From previous years:
New Year Sale 2025: 02-12 January
New Year Sale 2024: Started 3 January
New Year Sale 2023: 4-22 January

The first fliers or notices seem to come right before the new year. So not a very long wait.

I got a gift voucher for Christmas. I'm ready for the sales! Hope it is as good as last year.

Yes, I accumulated a lot of rewards during the holidays that will be used during this sale.

Starts tomorrow at 1600hrs UK time according to the email I've just received.

I'd guess the titles shown in the post are titles expected in the sale. The inclusion of The Great Gatsby gives me hope of a SE of last year's LE on the horizon, once they sell the current 786 that is.

9woodstock8786
Jan 1, 9:54 am

Some days ago I clicked on the link above and there were about 54 books shown, just with their normal prices. The Great Gatsby was among them as were some obvious choices like The Postman always rings twice, or The Patagonian Express.
I also saw the Godfather, so I am interested how much discount that one will get.
Doesn’t mean that these will definitely be the books in the sale of course

So I read (FS FB page) there will be flash sales again, with LE's probably added Jan 5th. Anybody an idea how flexible FS customer service is in case you add a non-sale book to your order, only to find out a day later that exactly that title has been added to the flash sale?

17woodstock8786
Edited: Jan 2, 9:23 am

>12 rowdyu: Yes some, The Iliad, the Bell Jar, some of the Marvel books, Dostoyevsky’s Short stories, Pole to Pole, Everest, again the Sharpe’s books, Silent Spring…but it will go live in a few hours and I hope there will be some more or others, because it wasn’t really that surprising. Of course as always, why should they discount the books that are selling well? 😅
Hmm I think Neverwhere and American Gods were there as well, I just remembered. Depending on the discount Neverwhere would be something, although I never liked the illustrations

18BriainC
Jan 2, 10:10 am

The website now says "The Folio Half Price Sale Begins Soon" which is a better discount than many recent sales, I think.

They never seem to include the more popular stuff like Iain M Banks or Ursula Le Guin. The Banks editions look very nice but are extremely expensive for what they are.

19A.Godhelm
Jan 2, 10:18 am

>18 BriainC: Last year's model was also half price, plus the day 1 flash sale which included newer or more popular titles (The Buried Giant, Pet Sematary, Man in the High Castle, Little Women, Weird Tales and some others I forget).

I hate the flash sales. The cost of ROW postage make them silly outside the UK.

21woodstock8786
Edited: Jan 2, 10:42 am

>20 BriainC: absolutely! And they also said that they weren’t collecting orders for people, in order to ship all together at the end of the sale. So even if it’s a good deal, paying 35€ for the shipping makes it a hard no

Thinking of the Gaiman books and possibly The Right Stuff but think I'll keep my powder dry for now.

I'm unsure about the art in The Right Stuff; I'd probably prefer actual images like the incredible photography in A Man on the Moon. I picked up the latter in the last sale and very much enjoyed it.

Thanks.

56rowdyu
Jan 2, 12:57 pm

I’m tempted to blind buy Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere. Would you say its tone and atmosphere are closer to American Gods or Anansi Boys? I LOVED American Gods but didn't really care for Anansi Boys. The latter was too lighthearted and playful for me. I enjoyed how dark and moody AG was.

57HonorWulf
Jan 2, 12:58 pm

>55 BreakBeatDJ: The books currently offered will remain during the sale unless they sell out. I look at these sale lists in two ways;

Firstly - it'd be nice to nab a bargain.
Secondly - thank god that x, y, and z isn't there. They'll do more like it!

There's nothing much in the first category for me.

In the second, I'm a bit disappointed to see the Henning Mankell books, but all of the areas that I really want to see in the future are clearly selling well enough that we'll get more! Hooray!

65HonorWulf
Jan 2, 2:16 pm

The Folio Book of War Poetry
I Am Legend (sold out)
Sharpe's Triumph
Sharpe's Fortress
Silent Spring
The Clicking of Cuthbert
Working

66Hanno
Jan 2, 2:16 pm

I wasn't planning on any purchases for a while as my TBR pile grew out of control, but 50% off A Man on the Moon changed that...

69HonorWulf

81zorg2099
Jan 2, 9:30 pm

Stayed up late last night and was glad I did! I wanted to get the Godfather as a birthday present for my father and I spotted the discount in my basket before the sale countdown hit zero. Also managed to check out the sale page and add Gatsby and the Right Stuff on a whim along with some non discounted books I already had in my basket for shipping efficiency. Sounds like from the comments there was a bit of a bloodbath around the Godfather and a couple of other low stock titles with the site slowing down and errors coming up for some people.

I'd already grabbed the Iliad and Dostoevsky at full price a few weeks prior so missed the benefit of the sale but at least I got them I guess! I think the lesson for me is although I managed to get what I want this time, if there's a book I really really must have I should probably not chance the sale if its low stock and get it ahead of time.

82LesMiserables
Jan 2, 11:25 pm

>81 zorg2099: Yes, there have been a ton of discussions over the years on buying strategy: fomo, sales, used market etc.

Recent years we have seen Limited Editions going on sale that was previously a heresy.

Of late, it seems these sales are populated by hard to shift stock with a few other items included to mix it up.

I'd much prefer FS to do store wide sales, or genre wide sales, with a blanket sale discount, not necessarily at the higher discount strategy of shift-em'-at-all-costs. ie 20-25% off. Or free shipping.

Flash sales and randomised sales strategies would also keep us guessing: not such a bad thing.

>88 BreakBeatDJ: I've already got Gatsby, Patagonian Express and Walk in the Woods and these are all great value at the sale price as well as being very nice productions. I've ordered the war poetry book from this sale and hope it's as good as previous Folio poetry editions

91BreakBeatDJ
Jan 3, 2:14 pm

>90 RavenSeeker:

Nice. Thanks for that. I live in the Shenandoah Valley and all my hiking groups sorta have a disdain for Walk In The Woods (lol). But I do like the art and the feel of this edition. I’m looking for some good value higher quality editions for my niece who has a very diverse taste in books. And I’m always looking to replace the hundreds of Penguins and Signet Classics.

92PJ-Reads
Jan 3, 9:30 pm

>91 BreakBeatDJ: shoutout to the Shenandoah Valley, neighbor!

I am somewhat tempted by a few books (Mankel, Lahiri, Blake) but not enough to pull the trigger. Will see if any flash sales push me over the edge but somehow I doubt it.

I think it’s obvious these sales are to clear out the low performers but I still find it amazing how unexciting they are even for enthusiasts, who should be the most excited. I’m not sure why they go to all the trouble of marketing these sales only to include so few titles and rarely the popular ones. Why not just lower the price on the slow movers instead of advertising a “BIG SALE” which is always so underwhelming?

Quite probably these sales are working well financially for FS since they keep doing them and I should just stop getting my hopes up every time.

93RavenSeeker
Jan 4, 4:41 am

>92 PJ-Reads: I think FS have worked out how best to manage the sales by now and reignite interest by adding in flash sales. It would be great to have big reductions in popular titles but it's unrealistic. However, there were some like Godfather, Iliad & I am Legend and of course these sold out quickly because they were in low numbers.
I bought Fear & Loathing and Shout along with a sale book realising that these will never be reduced in price. That's just how it is. The good news is that FS are now consistently showing a profit due to clever marketing and hard-nosed business practice so we can look forward to them churning out more quality books in future

94FitzJames
Jan 4, 7:07 am

>8 FitzJames: Well, from 786 pre-sale, there are just 176 copies of the Sam Wolfe Connelly ill. The Great Gatsby remaining. Yuko Shimizu's Gatsby looks rather a sure thing for a 2026 title.

95PJ-Reads

>93 RavenSeeker: this is a good perspective. While I wish the sales were more to write home about, I am glad FS can turn a profit and keep existing at all in this modern era.

96HonorWulf
Jan 4, 8:41 am

With Spring sold out, the next set of books with the lowest stock are:

Sharpe's Fortress (159 copies)
The Great Gatsby (172 copies)
The Franchise Affair (215 copies)
Get Shorty (231 copies)
The Singing Sands (239 copies)
Neverwhere (253 copies)
Everest (268 copies)
Parallel Worlds (290 copies)

I made a graduation gift of the 2013 Sam Wolfe Connelly edition before Folio altered the spine in a later printing (unsure which, fourth pr. perhaps?), and what with there being three different slipcase opening shapes belonging to the differing printings, I never got around to a copy for myself.

The font choice for the spine titling also never struck me as quite correct, so happily, there is the Shimizu!

101LesMiserables

I had a look again earlier at the books on sale, to ensure I hadn't missed any illustrated gems.
Leaving the Marvel stuff aside (imposters) and the books with photos/plates, are folk asking if, given many previous sales, that the pattern is close to this?

Choose to publish 'x'
Ineptly commission illustrator
Commission executed
Illustrations misfire due to bad art, match of work etc.
Volumes don't shift
Move to sales

102HonorWulf
Jan 5, 7:23 am

>101 LesMiserables: The opposite, really. Nearly half the books in the sale do not have original illustrations. And most of the fiction books are the usual suspects from past sales, many of which have already sold through their first printings. The only recent fiction books with illustrations in the sale are the two Wallander books and the new edition of I Capture the Castle. If anything, the sales have grown stale with slim pickings and the usual suspects since very few of the newer illustrated books ever make it to a sale. It's been a banner three years in a row for Folio, in terms of sales, profitability and book awards.

In the same boat. I just placed an order last month (that hasn't yet arrived), but held off on adding Iron Curtain b/c I thought it might be in the sale.

I went ahead and ordered it solo though, as I don't think I'd be tempted by anything else they might add. Even with shipping/tax it is still about 30% off list price.

An excellent read if anyone is on the fence.

It is really too bad, an Elmore Leonard series would have been amazing. Get Shorty is fine but not what I would have led with - the (almost perfect) movie casts a long shadow. Even in the sale I'm not tempted.

It’s a shame they haven’t sold better. With how popular the Agatha Christie novels are it seems there’s a market for golden age mysteries.

It's a while since I popped by LT and I must say it's lovely to see there are still lots of active Devotees.

I placed my first order in over a year, tempted by various offerings in the sale: Parallel Worlds, Half of a Yellow Sun, The Bell Jar - all as gifts for friends as I've already bought these thoroughly beautiful editions for myself a couple of years ago; The Panda's Thumb and A Man on the Moon. I'm particularly excited about Panda's Thumb as I was tempted a year or so ago but felt it was just too expensive at the RRP.

Sadly, I see that Folio's courier, DPD still live up to their acronym Delayed Perhaps Dead. Despite placing my order over the weekend with express i.e. 'next day' delivery, DPD failed to deliver on Tuesday after Folio announced that they had collected my parcel on Monday, and they've failed again to deliver today Wednesday. Plus ça change.

I waited in at home all day today, obsessively following the live tracking, and was actually standing outside by the main gate of my block of flats while the courier allegedly still had three deliveries to go in the neighbourhood before reaching me, when I suddenly and inexplicably received a message from DPD telling me that it hadn't been possible to deliver because I wasn't at home. This isn't the first time I've this experience from DPD (which is why I took the trouble to stand outside and wait for them in the first place). Why Folio continues to hire this troop of clowns is beyond me. I'm away from home travelling for ten days from tomorrow so the goddesses only know what will happen to the parcel. Not impressed Mrs. Omnichannel!

Meanwhile... I hope everyone here is enjoying their sale Folios :)

In the end I only got The Bell Jar in the sale, alongside one full price book- postage never feels worth it for one book! Considered the Jackson LE, but it isn’t worth paying postage twice. Similarly considered The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy but didn’t bite due to postage cost again. Had everything been released at the same time it would have been a different story, but they seem to like the staggered sale, I suppose it drives a bit of excitement. Well, I ended up waiting for a flash sale to match the intro one from last year and in doing so the other interesting titles sold out. That's just how this system works, but then they additionally lost the sales on the regular editions I'd order with the sale books to save on shipping of course. And at this point I may as well continue to wait until the new releases, and then it's soon time for the summer sale, and so it goes.

>195 brokenwolf: I loved The Postman Always Rings Twice. It's all the noir goodness without any of the stereotypical detective plot, or any of the hardnosed badasses with nice quips for that matter. The chronology is backwards, but it reminded me of the other sale regular Elmore Leonard in that he lets criminals be both stupid and incompetent with the occasional flashes of brilliance or humor, whereas crime fiction often lionizes them as masterminds or badasses. Get Shorty is an uninspired FS production in art and cover, but the rest of the book (paper, binding and of course content) is very good. I'm sad it's been such a dog, all but ensuring we'll see no more of him.

I wish the Wynne Jones books were clothbound like the Heyer books. Anytime I see a Folio book that's paper covered boards, I'm always hesitant.

But still, at 35 USD it is practically the price of a run-of-the-mill cheaply made mass market hardcover. For that alone, these sales are already extremely good value for the money. Honestly doesn't get much better than this.
