Tales From the One Thousand and One Nights - 2016 LIMITED EDITION
WOW!! THIS is one of the most magnificent books ever produced by The Folio Society. In my opinion it follows after the wonderful Birds Drawn for John Gould by Edward Lear (reviewed here.) and the mostt expensive book ever produced by the FS, The Luttrell Psalter (reviewed here.).
It was published by The Folio Society as a limited edition in two volumes, one being the text of many (but not all) of the 1001 Nights introduced by Robert Irwin and translated by Malcolm and Ursula Lyons; the other being fifty plates by Salvador Dali illustrating individual stories. The stories and plates are cross-referenced between the two volumes. The edition limitation was 750 copies and initially sold for £885.
PLATES VOLUME
Dali was commissioned by the Italian publisher Rizzoli to produce 500 watercolours, but only completed 100 in 1966. The proposed book and illustrations were never published, and the artwork became scattered. The Folio Society collected fifty of these illustrations and published them in an elegant, large format volume, each piece of art overlayed with translucent paper marked with the number of the Night to which it refers in the text volume.
There are fifty colour plates by Salvador Dali printed on Modigliani paper. The large plates volume is quarter bound in black calf skin, gilt blocked with title on the spine, the sides being covered in light brown Tsarina Crush silk with Dali's signature gilt blocked on the lower right corner. The endpapers are dark blue, the page tops are gilded and there are 112 pages.
TEXT VOLUME
A detailed introduction by Robert Irwin explains Dali’s commission, the beguiling artwork and its challenges. Malcolm C. and Ursula Lyons’ elegant and idiomatic translation from the Arabic is superb.
This smaller volume is printed on Abbey wove paper and is bound in black cloth, title gilt blocked on spine and with a white paper title label on the cover. The endpapers are dark blue. It is unillustrated, has a dark blue ribbon page marker and runs to 512 pages.
SOLANDER CASE
A huge dark blue cloth Solander case contains both volumes. It is gilt lined, and title blocked in gilt and white on cover and spine and measures 49.8x37.8x10.8cm.
