I'm just weird that way

Unlike most of you, I read very little science fiction and almost no fantasy, but I enjoy it on the screen or, sometimes, in audio dramas. What is the difference for me I wonder. The minutia I'm sure is part of it and the made up names etc. No patience with having to figure out some strange set of rules or wading through someone explaining them to me. But, on screen, I can be captivated.

A recent example is the limited series made about 10 years ago based on Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. I just watched it on Prime and enjoyed it. Part of it is the production and watching a gorgeous film with excellent acting. He didn't have anything to do with J.S. & Mr. N (I don't think), but like the way Guillermo del Toro films his work - sumptuous. I even liked his anthology series he did for Netflix a few years ago.

Of course I know the book exists and that it's a doorstop, but I have no temptation at all to read it. Same goes for Tolkien, Rowling, Philip K. Dick, and other cornerstone writers of the genres.

Of course there are some exceptions, like the Murderbot Diaries series and Wool, which I've read and watched. Well, I didn't make it through all of the Wool adaptation, but am waiting for the next Murderbot installment. I loved Fringe when it was on, but know I probably wouldn't read it as a series if it existed. There are lots more, but I'll dig them up later.

Anyway, it's just another of my quirks.

>2 MrAndrew: You're still around! I'll admit a day or so ago I was contemplating sending you a message to make sure you were still here.

>1 Bookmarque: I didn't read fantasy for a stretch of about 20 years. I was reading mostly classics, nonfiction and 'literary novels.' I decided to revisit The Lord of the Rings before the movies were released and that's when I realized how much I missed the genre and I dove right back in. (I was still reading science fiction novels the whole time, and Stephen King.)

Funny how cycles come and go with us. Another sci-fi thing I liked on the screen that's really new is Pluribus, a series on Apple TV starring Rhea Seehorn (Kim from Better Call Saul). It's a weird pod-people sort of scenario, but a few people didn't get taken over and she's trying to figure out how to release the ones who have been. It's funny and very strange at the same time. She also did an audio science fiction thing for Audible that I loved - Convolution. I'd probably read the first one if it was offered that way, but not sure about the second.

>4 Bookmarque: Pluribus is freaking awesome! It explores so many aspects of society and human nature in general. Love it. And Carol, while not particularly likeable before the event, has a lot of traits to be admired. Plus there's so much humor.
