Since our weather is going to be miserable this weekend, I am hoping to get a lot of reading done!
3cbl_tn
I'm in if the power stays on. If we lose power I'll be busy trying to find a place to stay warm.
4ChrisG1
I'm in again. Just starting on Magician: Apprentice by Raymond E. Feist, and continuing Crusaders by Dan Jones.

For this weekend another category should be added for everyone to detail their "weather report." Our forecast in Seattle is unremarkable, so I want to live vicariously through all of you.

I haven’t done a social distancing readathon in several years but, with the ultra frigid forecast for this weekend, I’m planning to stay home and read. I’ll take an occasional break to watch hockey, football, and a college women’s gymnastics meet on Sunday.
I don’t mean routinely cold, but rather the coldest weather here in years. Right now, shortly before 3 am, it’s only 4 below but, by 8 am, it’ll be 15 below (37 below with wind chill) and it’ll rise up to a not so balmy 8 below this afternoon.
I’m planning to finish The Boys of Winter, which is about the 1980 U.S. Winter Olympics hockey team. Also hoping to make a big dent in Edith Wharton’s The Custom of the Country, unless I feel the need for a comfort read, in which case, I’ll pull a mystery off my Kindle.
Oh, I’m in suburban Chicago. That southern snowstorm might give us a bit of snow on Sunday but they seem to change their minds every few hours about that.

I'm in as well, it's a long weekend here for Auckland Anniversary Weekend. Looking like windy, rainy, stormy weather despite it being the middle of summer.
10pm
I've been reading The House of Spirits by Isabel Allende & The Scent of Lemon Leaves by Clara Sánchez.
Dinner was homemade burritos. I made Guatemalan refried black beans, Mexican red rice, guacamole and spicy beef.

Friday Startup
Books read from: All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker. Bending the Law: The Story of the Dalkon Shield Bankruptcy by Richard B. Sobol. Arrogant Years by Lucette Lagnado. My continuous reading book is Katharine Graham's Washington by Katharine Graham. My computer book is Walking It Off by Doug Peacock. I am listening to American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins.
Books finished:
Book Thoughts: I have lots of books started and not close to finishing any of them except for American Dirt. I should finish that one today. It is a cold weekend and I plan on spending it inside so reading will be a good activity. I am enjoying my reading of All the Colors of the Dark and hope that others on LT will get around to reading it. Very thought provoking book. I am also liking Arrogant Years. There is much more in this one about the Egyptian Jewish culture than in the first memoir by this author.
Activities: I have some knitting to do. I got my sweater cast on and the neck ribbing finished, so now I have to start working on the short rows in the back. I hope to get most of that done today and while I am watching my Friday night TV shows.
Reading Time Today: 1 hours
Time listening:
Time posting:
Food: I am going to make ham and bean soup. I have plenty of spinach from the CFS membership and some smoked ham hocks, not to mention several bags of navy beans to use up. It is a soup kind of weekend anyway, so I will soak the beans tonight and put the stuff in the crock pot to have tomorrow night for supper.
Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 561
Total Time Reading since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 1732 hours since I started doing the weekend Read-A-Thon starting in April of 2020.

I’m in.
We’re expecting sleet/ice/freezing rain beginning Sat evening. Then a continuing deep cold spell will keep things frozen for several days. We will be fine as long as we don’t lose power.
Books:
Just finishing up THE EXCHANGE by J Grisham, a sequel to THE FIRM published 30+ years ago. Then l have many to choose from.
Breakfast - coffee, cinnamon roll, dried apricots.
Lunch - egg salad sandwich, potato sticks, orange.
Other activity:
Sent a postcrossing card.
My new sunroom is essentially finished. Only took about 3 months.. l moved a rocking chair out there and a couple small tables. My cats are going to love it.
Current weather: cloudy, 49F/10C
This is as warm as it’s going to get over the next 10 days.

I’m in and look forward to reading about everyone’s wintery weather….as we’re in northern NJ we’re expecting a direct hit and I’m seeing predictions up to 20”. We’ll see: weather in the mid-Atlantic is hard to predict.
I MUST make faster progress on Magic Mountain, as I’m behind the group and we’re closing in on the finish. This week I had a flashback to college, struggling to keep my eyes open while reading German philosophy. How little has changed despite the years that have passed! I’ll be far more into clearing the driveway this weekend but with you’all as company I’m hoping to stick with it!
Enjoy the snuggling in!

Well, I'm staying inside as we are again on catastrophic fire danger warning in country Victoria, Australia. It was 42 C here today (which is 108 F) and it is going to be even hotter into next week.
Just finished Ariadne, which was a bit of a disappointing read. Starting The Silver Chair next for my Narnia reread.

Friday:
Weather report: The high was -9F. We pulled out our various portable heaters to try to keep it warm in the apartment as ice and frost coated the insides of our windows. This is an apartment that usually runs very warm in the winter. The heat dial was maxed out but it was still 60-61F in my bedroom before we got those heaters going. It has been a very cold week even for an area that is used to a long cold winter. I'm in the Twin Cities area of MN.
Books read from: All the Colors We Will See by Patrice Gopo, The Witch Who Trades with Death by C.M. Alongi
Books finished: All the Colors We Will See by Patrice Gopo
Snacks: hoarded Sweet Loren's Christmas chocolate mint gf cookies, Annie's gummies, hot chocolate, peanut butter & jelly gf english muffin, tortilla chips (stress ate those when I couldn't get access to the world feed of figure skating yesterday on Peacock before I gave up and signed up for a VPN to watch the ISU feed), Bob's bar (peanut butter), squeezie cinnamon applesauce
Non-book activities: It was a general strike in MN so I didn't do any work, including working on my novel. We watched some figure skating (Four Continents) and Jeopardy (Tournament of Champions!).

Saturday Report
Weather: Cold. Outside temperature is at 0 F. Warmed the car up and drove to work. Had about 2 inches of snow. It has continued to snow off and on all day. Officially, we have about 3.5 inches of snow. I think there is more than that, but I am not an official weatherman.
Book Thoughts: I am making great progress on All the Colors of the Dark. I am on page 320 of a 620 page book. It is really good and I hope other LT'ers will read it.
Activities: Got up and went to work this morning. Mail was late, but that was not unexpected since the dispatch center for Kansas is in Wichita. That is almost all the way across the state from here and they are getting more snow than we have here up on the northern edge. It is cold here, but not unreasonable for this time of year. Right around 0. This is a return to winter as it was 50 years ago before climate change got its grip on the world. There is snow on the ground, but not an unmanageable amount.
Reading Time Today: 1 hours
Time listening:
Time posting:
Food: I am making ham and bean soup and later will make some cornbread to go with it. Good cold weather food.

Friday night
Weather report: Clear and very cold compared to the rest of the year but mild in comparison to other places in the US. Lows around 32 F. The winter has been extremely mild in Seattle this year...
Books read from: Pet Semetary
Books finished: 0
Time reading: approx 1 hour
Snacks: Girl scout cookies delivered from a trans supportive troop in the twin cities
Thoughts: worried this book will be too scary for my taste. I dont typically like scary movies but I decided to see if I would like Stephen King. His writing is very good but the jury is still out on whether this genre is for me.
Non-book activities: Watched a show about British heritage homes and the people who restore and repair them. It was a long work day and I was so tired when getting home that I watched a show, read for an hour, and then fell immediately to sleep.

Sat morning
weather:
COLD - 28 F but wind chill making it feel like 14 F. Cloudy but sun trying to poke through. Our snow/sleet predicted to begin about 11p. We wrapped the outside faucets and shifted stuff in the garage to allow us to get one car inside. We should go out one more time and get a bag of sand or kitty litter for walkway.
Books:
Finished THE EXCHANGE by Grisham; somewhat unsatisfying ending.
Started 2 others that seem promising.
A LONG AND HAPPY LIFE, R Price, and
NORTH by D Napoli
breakfast: coffee, strawberries, granola.
Other:
Postcrossing. I try to send 1 postcard a day and hope to recieve 1 each day.
Searching for an extra large plastic saucer I bought specially to water the wildlife but can't find it in the garage clutter. My husband is now looking for it... No doubt got buried when we rearranged to fit the car in.

Made progress on an unfinished audiobook this afternoon, Black Ops by Tony Geraghty (I’ll fix the link when I get to my PC tomorrow).
Watched one episode of Pantheon, an AI-SciFi series on Netflix I saw recommended here on LT.
And… I’m posting as a means of procrastinating from reading Magic Mountain, but will spend a chunk of this evening reading that. I liked it at the beginning. I’m unsure why it’s turned into such a slog for me …
We’re ready for Fern, having squeezed the second car into the bigger bay. We’re fortunate to have the equivalent of 3, but as our eldest’s possessions are all in the little bay (his moving van has been delayed by weather), it was a bit like Lego/Jenga project today!
It’s currently 11F / -11C plus windchill. Dear Australia: I’ll happily swap you thirty degrees F or C!!!
And, yes, Minnesotans are on the mind. I’m particularly worried about everyone’s safety.

Sun morning
Weather:
Snowing, 26F but feels like 17. A light dusting of snow on the ground, more predicted. Happily, we have power and the pipes didn’t freeze.
Books:
A LONG AND HAPPY LIFE
and l picked up
THE COLOR OF SECRETS
I put NORTH by Napoli on the giveaway pile.
I volunteer with the county literacy group and I’m gathering books for a kids’ book drive. I still have many.
For dinner last night l tried a new recipe for sausage lentil soup and we liked it.
Other activity:
Watched the Netflix thriller HIS AND HERS, based on the book by Alice Feeney.

Saturday:
Weather report: The high was -2F. Portable heaters still chugging away in our chilly apartment. I'm in the Twin Cities area of MN.
Books read from: The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer
Books finished: 0
Snacks: Annie's gummies, hot chocolate, gf pork potstickers that I managed to cook to perfection (unlike the soggy mess I made the last time I made them), tortilla chips, Bob's bar (peanut butter), squeezie cinnamon applesauce
Thoughts: I was especially shook by the ICE shooting yesterday in Minneapolis because it was right behind the building I used to live in a year ago. My family helped me understand that I can't be concerned about what might have happened (if I was still there) but about where I am today. I am still well, alive, and committed to everyone's liberation.
Non-book activities: I spent the morning writing (started a new poem, worked on the fifth draft of another poem, submitted poetry to a contest, did further backstory on a different novel project). I spent the afternoon watching more figure skating (Four Continents).

Not nearly as much reading time as I would have liked but I had a good time playing games with Kerry!

Saturday
Weather report: Clear and cold. The daffodils are already starting to pop up in my neighborhood because the weather has been so unusually mild this year, but this week has been frosty and cold.
Books read from: Pet Semetary (Somehow I didn't notice until yesterday that the title is intentionally misspelled!)
Books finished: Nothing yet
Time reading: Lost count but definitely at least a couple hours.
Snacks: None but my partner made me tea for my nighttime reading and the house smells from the chicken broth I am making in the crock pot. Bread was rising on the counter for hours. Sunday will be a great day with soup and bread.
Thoughts: This book is good! I am constantly nervous that it is going to hit a point where I can't read it anymore because it is too creepy but I am almost halfway through and I'm still going strong.
Non-book activities: Avoided the MN shooting videos online but read enough summaries to understand what happened and to be upset. Called my senators to ask them to vote against ICE funding. Did lots of errands for most of the day and hoping to have fewer responsibilities on Sunday.

Weather: Cold. Outside temperature is at 15 F. Scooped the entryway and the deck. Went to church.
Book Thoughts: I made significant progress on All the Colors of the Dark. I am on page 420 of a 620 page book. It is really good and I hope other LT'ers will read it. I also read about 10 pages in Arrogant Years. This second memoir is much better than the first.
Activities: Got up and went to church this morning. The sun is out and melted the snow off my car. Also melting the snow off of the roof of the house. For us, in this part of Kansas this was NOT a major winter storm. Just a plain old January winter storm. The snow is very light and dry. It isn't good snowman snow. Or snowball snow.
Reading Time Today: 2 hours
Time listening:
Time posting:
Food: I mad ham, vegetable, and bean soup. Couldn't make any cornbread because I didn't have buttermilk. I did have a fancy loaf of bread from the bakery so used that to sop up all those wonderful soup flavors. My sister is sick with a cold, so I took two containers of soup over to her. Good cold and cold weather food.
Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 561
Total Time Reading since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 1735 hours since I started doing the weekend Read-A-Thon starting in April of 2020.

Wrap-up:
Read from 2 books
- Black Ops by Tony Geraghty
- The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann
Finished neither
Thoughts: Had a V8 moment (d’oh!) when I realized reading along with a narrator of an audiobook version of The Magic Mountain would help me focus. Working brilliantly, and now am nearly caught up to my reading group. Found a very well narrated version on LibriVox, should anyone else be interested.
New England Fish Chowder was made this weekend and often consumed. Substituted Haddock for the Cod this time: different texture, equally enjoyable (lotsa black pepper is crucial).
Weather: we may get another 1-2” but we’re just about done. We received ~15.5” / 40cm, although some reports have us at 24”/ 61cm. Somewhere inbetween is the reality. Had to flatten out a bit of snow in the yard for our senior citizen Fluffernutter to do her business as the snow is mid-chest for her! Our temps remain in the teens-20s in F, roughly -9C at the moment.

Weekend summary:
Books read from: Magician: Apprentice by Raymond E. Feist, Crusaders by Dan Jones
Books finished: Crusaders - may possibly finish Magician: Apprentice tonight in bed, we shall see.
Pages read: 550-ish
My son made smoked chicken wings & we watched the Seahawks win a trip to the Super Bowl. He's the best cook I know & these wings were better than I've had anywhere, including places that specialize in wings. Yum!

Books completed over weekend:
Ian McEwan, What We Can Know
Johan Van Overtveldt, The Mystic Hand: How Central Banks Shaped the 21st Century Global Economy
J. A. White, The Thickety: The Last Spell (4)
The Mystic Hand was an Early Review that I mislaid somewhere or another and that I've owed LT a review of for several years. I decided to get hold of it on Kindle, bite the bullet, and make myself 42/42 on my Early Reviewing obligation.
Considering the weather in the Philadelphia suburbs, I think I'll just stay in for the next couple of days anyway and continue the readathon. I've been trying to get through Thomas Mann's joseph and His Brothers for the "Reading Through Time" group's January reading theme (Retellings of 'Classics). I've got an omnibus volume of the entire quartet, and at 1200pp it's really quite cumbersome, so I'm hoping to get through the first two books in the omnibus and then turn to Kindle for the two final books, which I got for 99 cents each in a convenient Kindle form. (The first two books don't seem to be available in English on Kindle.)

Weekend Wrapup
Weather: Cold. Outside temperature was -9 F when I started the car to go to work. Cold but not overly cold for the Great Plains in January.
Book Thoughts: I will finish All the Colors of the Dark today and it will be my first 5 star read for the year. It will also be the first time in a long time that I have had a January 5 star book. I hope to also finish American Dirt today.
Activities: Went to work this morning and had trouble with all of the computer systems. Had to call the help desk and they are sending me a replacement for one of the scanners and they helped me fix the other one.
Reading Time Today: 2 hours
Time listening:
Time posting:
Food: More bean soup. I am going to fix a fish stew later this week. I have a bunch of frozen fish to use and since it is cold outside, a nice warm soup feels so good.

Sunday:
Weather report: The high was 4F. Portable heaters still chugging away in our chilly apartment. I'm in the Twin Cities area of MN.
Books read from: The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer, Fires Which Burned Brightly by Sebastian Faulks
Books finished: The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer
Snacks: Annie's gummies, hot chocolate, tortilla chips with A2 lactose free cheese, Bobo's PB&J round, squeezie cinnamon applesauce, gf english muffin with vegan butter
Thoughts: I had to order the Faulks book from Blackwell's, which I thought was still independent. I did appreciate that the price for the U.S. was listed in U.S. dollars and was inclusive of shipping. It came speedily. I think they're one of the stores that SantaThing uses. I read the first essay/chapter and am not convinced yet. I will give it more time for me to warm to it. Ok, I have more thoughts about SantaThing. I've tended to use Powells because they have such a large selection in stock/available. I remember shopping for people I was matched with at some of the smaller stores and being frustrated with how little of what I was looking at was available. This year the person I was matched with chose Longfellow Books. The search function there was sooo nice, especially compared with Powells (and that's after they just redid their website), and I thought the selection of books available without special order was pretty good. Anyway. Just reminding myself that there are options and I don't have to default to the same thing everytime. A good reminder for life in general.
Non-book activities: Watched more figure skating (Four Continents). Had a bit of a blow-up around the persistent slovenly state of the kitchen and dining area, lots of feelings for all, including me feeling sheepish for letting it build to the point where I couldn't communicate my displeasure reasonably, but we made it through to the other side, all promising to do better. We were intending to do some home karaoke in the evening but my brother called: he calls me (the oldest) once a quarter or so for a multi-hour conversation.

>32 lottpoet: I appreciate your thoughts on bookstores. I have been to Powells many times so it has always been my default choice for SantaThing.
I like that their website search function shows you the number of "pages" of search results - Powells instead has a "load more" feature to go to the next page. However, Powells has a feature to filter results and I don't see a filter on Longfellow's website.

I didn't get to read as much as I had hoped over the weekend. I spent Saturday morning preparing for the winter weather that was supposed to arrive in the early afternoon, and I played the piano for a funeral at 3. The freezing rain was supposed to start about the time the funeral would end, so I made arrangements for Wally to stay with a neighbor so he wouldn't be stuck in his crate if the ice delayed my return home. I listened to several chapters of Unlikely Animals while I was busy Saturday morning, but once I got home from the funeral I mostly watched BritBox.
Yesterday I read several chapters of The Tiger in the Attic, a Kindertransport memoir. I hope to finish it this evening.
