I’ve noticed more international crime fiction lately — what makes a setting feel authentic to you?

I think this applies to any genre of fiction ... the story becomes intriguing BECAUSE it takes place in that particular setting, if that makes any sense.
Maybe it's better to explain the polar opposite of what I mean: A friend loaned me a fluffy historical romance with a plot that could be cut-and-pasted into any century, any location, just change the wardrobe a little. If it didn't advertise itself as "Regency England," you wouldn't know.
That's something I enjoy about Deborah Crombie's writing ... she takes a little slice of life in the UK, for example, families living in narrowboats on the canals and makes that an integral part of the storyline.
