here is a thread for us all to tell you about our trip in NYC. Bib and I posted pictures on the flickr account and will post some pictures here soon that are pictures of some great things we saw!

I'll let people tell you all about our trip but I'll start with Bib and me prior to meeting up with people.

Bib and I left my apartment about 7:30 and drove to Hoboken, NJ took the path (NJ subway) into the city and the subway up to 79th. We stoped for an ATM and breakfast/water and headed into the park. Then we couldn't find the castle so we kept going in and out of the park. We were finally able to get ahold of Compski to find out that she, K and Suge were also lost but not far from us so about 3 hours after our departure from my apartment we met up...

I'll let someone else take it from there, and will post pics soon.

all I can say is wow to jp juggling cat.

It was pretty impressive! Hello! At some point I'm hoping someone will post the group pic we took on top of the Castle, Mandy's didn't come out that well. In it you will notice I'm holding a certain postcard, you were there MrA!

Jun 8, 2008, 9:09 pm

Thank you, ris. I will post more pictures but I need to be less busy and it needs to be less hot. I still have some pictures from LadyN's visit as well.

MrA, who was your colorful friend? You didn't say. :o)

Fun but now I am holding my breath until I get the password. Hurry foggi hur. . .

Jun 8, 2008, 10:56 pm

Whew thanks foggi! I passed out twice but it was worth it when I finally saw the pictures.

Yay! I love seeing the fun meet up photos as well as the mug shots. All our friends parrots, plastic lego Hermione, our preraphaelite librarian and princess rissa!

I may upload later when I am not so tired.

12rissa

princess? I'm not wearing a tiarra in that one!

Jun 9, 2008, 8:20 am

Suge was so happy because we were going to be on time, and it turned out that no one was in a sense. Belvedere Castle seemed as though it would be just as difficult to find as Hogwarts. ;)

I agree, jp and cat did a marvelous job! I got some really great pictures of that as well as a video of jp juggling.

I have to fiddle around with the computer some more to upload images to Flickr but have missed LTing so much that I wanted to drop by on some threads first.

Mandy and bib ~ I have two pictures from on top of the castle that I will try to get in the flickr account this morning.

14biblioholic29
Jun 9, 2008, 8:55 am

Yay! Okay, I suppose I'll take the story from around where Mandy left off.

We met up with Compski, suge and K and were soon joined by jp and Cat across the street from the Natural History Museum. We all knew we were near where we had planned to meet, but hadn't been able to find it. We started walking and after consulting compski map many times finally found Belvedere Castle, which we have decided must be unplottable.

I'll let someone else tell you about the castle and the stairs....

15jugglingpaynes
Jun 9, 2008, 9:26 am

The stairs in the castle you mean? Oh, that was funny! The stairs are narrow and circular, allowing for only one person going either up or down at a time. I kept thinking of Dr. Seuss' The Zax:

And it happened that both of them came to a place
Where they bumped. There they stood.
Foot to foot. Face to face.

There were so many people on the floor above us coming down, we must have started up about three times before we actually made it. Hilarious! Our group met so many real New Yorkers on those steps. Well I'm not moving, I've already gone down two steps. I don't care if you're halfway up already.

:oD

16biblioholic29
Jun 9, 2008, 9:39 am

Hmm...interesting. I kept thinking of the Return of the King movie when Sam is working his way upstairs and the orcs are scared of his shadow. Mostly because of the look of the stairs though.

17Mandy2
Jun 9, 2008, 10:54 am

well we spent a lot of time at the castle, our purpose was to look for a bench to sit down to watch JP do some Juggling but we kept stoping and talking it was so much fun. The talking came so easily and we would just stand there until someone would be remember that we were looking for a place to sit. We finally made it out of the castle and found a bench. We exchaged little gifts, ate snickerdoodles (made by cat and they were yuuuummmmy) and we watched JP juggle...

18Marensr
Jun 9, 2008, 12:41 pm

#12 Ah yes rissa but you will always be a princess to us :) Unless you want to cede that title to MrA. . .

19rissa
Jun 9, 2008, 2:10 pm

I think MrA has earned the title of pirate.

20Marensr
Jun 9, 2008, 3:17 pm

Ah ha so we need a princess in the group - a princess and a pirate!

21Kerian
Jun 9, 2008, 3:59 pm

After we watched JP juggle, we abandoned the benches and walked (downhill?) along the path. We went to a grassy area all in shade and took to the ground where we watched JP and cat perform the most amazing tricks I've ever seen. They're both amazingly talented.

22biblioholic29
Jun 9, 2008, 4:52 pm

After jp and Cat finished their mini-performance, we all sat around on the grass and chatted for awhile before deciding to head towards 5th Avenue in search of lunch...

23Marensr
Jun 9, 2008, 5:03 pm

It sounds like such a good day guys. I am happy for you all and maybe we can start our own circus. . .

24compskibook
Jun 9, 2008, 5:54 pm

22 continued ...where we could sit down an cool off. The high that day was over 90 degrees! We walked under the Delacorte (I think) clock and through the Central Park Zoo and decided to have lunch at the cafe there. I think I said on another thread it was like the chat room on a busy night: many conversations going on at the same time.

25Kerian
Jun 9, 2008, 7:04 pm

I recall three ongoing conversations at one point while we sat and had lunch, though some of the time we held one conversation. If anyone would like to know if we talked about you, the answer is yes! We talked about you, and you, and you, .... Toward the end of lunch, we learned that suge is prejudice against green gummy bears.

26biblioholic29
Jun 9, 2008, 7:11 pm

And K had her first taste of cheese fries!

27Kerian
Jun 9, 2008, 7:17 pm

Yes - I loved them. I was really surprised when I saw what they looked like. They reminded me of nachos.

28Mandy2
Jun 9, 2008, 8:49 pm

It's all getting fuzzy now...but we left lunch after a good cool down and chit chats. as we were walking away from the cafe we saw this...

which K promptly bought. After Suge looked at it she realized he was missing his scar!!!! She marched right up to the artist and explained to him his mistake which is corrected. Then I don't know who but someone found a wallet on a bench. I looked inside and it was fillled with cash and credit cards (obviously a tourist) but no officers in sight. Suge called them and they told us to wait until 3:30! that was at 2:30. So we called Foggi to pass the time, while she was on the phone we saw an officer and K ran after them pushing people aside to catch him but he drove off before she could reach him and so we went back to guarding the wallet and talking to foggi. Then after maybe 15 or 20 mins a woman walked up to us saw her wallet said "oh good" reached past us grabbed her wallet and walked away and muttered a small thank you to us. We were all very sad at how anti-climatic it all turned out to be, but at least we were free to roam again so that's what we did.

29foggidawn
Jun 9, 2008, 9:11 pm

Ooh! This is my part of the story, as you can see from the references to me in post #28. Though I didn't get to go to New York, I did get a phone call, which was thrilling and special and extremely confusing. It was a bit like being in chat when everyone is talking at once, except that I didn't always know who was talking, and I couldn't always tell what they were saying! Still, I was excited to hear from everyone, especially in the middle of the lost wallet drama.

All right, carry on with the story!

30Marensr
Jun 10, 2008, 12:22 am

(Oops I am interrupting the story for just a moment to say I checked the flckr account and reena and letta are princesses too and I added a couple of photos)

Okay continue tales HEers in NY!

31biblioholic29
Jun 10, 2008, 8:41 am

We hadn't really any idea as to where to head next so we just started walking and ended up at the end of the park, 5th Ave and 59th St, where there is an extremely interesting Apple store.

Basically a large glass box with stairs and a lift. The store is underground. Compski needed some earbuds, so we headed down the stairs to find some....

32jugglingpaynes
Jun 10, 2008, 10:47 am

It was very crowded, not like that last picture. I think most of the people in there were just trying to cool off. They were sitting on benches that encircled the stairwell/elevator.

I wanted to go to FAO Schwartz to reminisce about my first date with my husband. FAO Schwartz is right next to the Apple store, so we headed there next...

33Mandy2
Edited: Jun 10, 2008, 11:19 am

Now the fun really began. We walked in and saw a huge display of Pandas! So being a Panda myself, i had my picture taken with them (as seen on the flickr account). Then we looked over at the stairs and this was what we saw...

34Mandy2
Jun 10, 2008, 11:21 am

...leading to a wonderful 100% Harry Potter section!

35biblioholic29
Jun 10, 2008, 11:50 am

Needless to say, we were in heaven. I'm sure the poor guy who worked in that section (dressed in full HP gear!) had never seen so many adults quite so excited at all the Harry Potter memorabilia, nor quite so knowledgable about what they all were (there was a very cool little bronze(?) statue which had a Common Welsh Green, Swedish Shortsnout, Chinese Fireball, and of course a Hungarian Horntail all stacked one on top of the other, a little over $400 if I remember correctly). We all bought stuff, I got a set of Harry glasses which I'm wearing in the pic on flickr and a talking Ron doll

which I am very excited to eventually be able to set up with my Legolas and talking Charlie from Lost dolls (once I have my place and can get the others out of storage). Other people bought...

36littlegeek
Jun 10, 2008, 12:05 pm

bib, what does Ron say? I must know.

37Mandy2
Jun 10, 2008, 1:44 pm

I just bought the glasses.

38catbastet
Jun 10, 2008, 1:50 pm

JP and I bought HP magnets. But when we went to other sections of FAO Schwartz, we also got a small bunny toy for my little sis, and a stuffed Lyme disease microbe doll for my little brother.

39biblioholic29
Jun 10, 2008, 2:18 pm

He says various things from the OotP movie such as:

"Who are you and what have you done with Hermione Granger?"

"STUPEFY!"

"Don't worry, I'll go easy on you."

I can't remember the rest now, but there are at least 6 sayings all together. I knew even if no one else appreciated my new toy you would lg!

40catbastet
Jun 10, 2008, 2:32 pm

LOL, funny, bib. :)

Also, while we were in the HP section, we all were trying on hats (there were a lot of different Dumbledore hats). Lots of fun!

41elbakerone
Jun 10, 2008, 2:48 pm

KIK - TOTALLY AWESOME, GUYS!
Love the talking Ron doll!!

42littlegeek
Jun 10, 2008, 3:18 pm

I want one of those Ron dolls. I would put it right next to my talking Tim Gunn. Imagine the conversations they could have....

"Make it work!"
"Stupify!"

43biblioholic29
Jun 10, 2008, 3:23 pm

KIK! They were actually pretty reasonably priced too, under $25.

44littlegeek
Jun 10, 2008, 3:24 pm

*goes to check amazon....*

45littlegeek
Jun 10, 2008, 3:30 pm

There's a Hermione, too! Here's what she says:

Who cares? I mean, it's sort of exciting, isn't it? Breaking the rules...
Stupefy!
He really is out there isn't he? We've got to be able to defend ourselves. And if Umbridge refuses to teach us how, we need someone who will.
We're not learning how to defend ourselves. We're not learning how to pass our OWLS. She's taking over the entire school!

And Ron says this:

It isn't easy being best friends with the world's most famous wizard.
Who are you, and what have you done with Hermione Granger?
and I let her do that... It's good manner, isn't it? It was completely intentional.
Combat? What's he think we're forming some sort of wizard army? and We're not going to use magic?
Don't worry... I'll go easy on him.
Stupefy!

I think someone screwed up a few of those. Can you imagine having them both and making them have conversations. Herminone's should say something about SPEW.

There's like only 1 Hermione and 3 Rons left.

46littlegeek
Jun 10, 2008, 3:32 pm

There's also a Harry one, but they don't tell you what he says. There's 6 of them left, weirdly.

47biblioholic29
Jun 10, 2008, 3:49 pm

At FAO Schwartz they had oodles of Ron, a few Hermiones and 18" Harry's, I'm not sure if they could talk or not. Are you going to get one? I think he's pretty cool!

48biblioholic29
Jun 11, 2008, 8:41 am

We seem to have gotten somewhat off track. Mandy also bought a Lego mug for her hubby with his name on it and a set of bathtime drums for our nephew.

At some point the guy working the Harry Potter area left and we moved on to an area with more HP collectibles along with LOTR and PoC collectibles as well. Mandy has some cool pictures of the chess set thing and others took some cool pictures in this area as well. I will wait for a bit to see if anyone posts them...

Side note: Any of you NY HEers get sick? I had a sore throat by the time I got back to the apartment, coughed the entire next day, and had a runny nose the next day. I currently am wheezing a bit and sometimes a little light headed. I hope you all didn't catch anything from me!

Maybe you caught something in the he--ckhole I like to call the 59th St. uptown 5 train platform.

We were a little sneezy, but I think it's just allergies. Clover is in bloom.

57biblioholic29
Jun 12, 2008, 8:24 am

Nothing but allergies for me either, my bet would be you caught something on the plane, it always takes a few days of incubation before you start feeling lousy. That's why I don't care how hot I am, I don't ever turn my air thingy on when I fly.

Where did we leave off the story? Oh right, Mandy was going to post pics from the collectible area. Next to that was Madame Alexander where they had (surprise) Harry Potter dolls. This was my personal favorite of those:

This is the biggest pic I could find of it!

Jun 13, 2008, 8:27 am

So after looking around the Madame Alexander area we continued to wander around FAO Schwartz for awhile. We looked at some awesome dollhouses (I want one), a lego area where in addition to the lego Hermione already on the Flickr account there was a grouping of Harry, Ron, and Hagrid. Mandy didn't get that pic, so someone else will need to post it! There was a train area, complete with the Hogwarts Express (again, someone post the pic please!) and other fun toy areas. There was an area where some employees were teaching kids how to juggle and we tried to get JP to show them how it was done, but no avail. We also watched some kids playing with "The Big Piano". I wanted to play too, but I would have needed a Robert Loggia to my Tom Hanks. And also the line was really long...

82LadyN
Jun 13, 2008, 8:30 am

I regret not going in FAO Schwartz when I was over there... Still, another reason to go back!

Just to clarify: The FAO Schwartz employees were teaching hacky-sack, not juggling. I don't know how to hacky-sack. Yes, I know, sad but true, I don't know everything. I try, but there is a lot I need to learn.

Like speed-reading. :o)

Jun 16, 2008, 8:35 am

So to finish up the story, K, suge, Mandy and I sat around outside FAO Schwartz and talked for a while (we found a nice spot where the AC from the store would hit us and some people got ice cream). Then we grabbed a taxi (we were hoping for Cash Cab but no luck) to Times Square where we went looking for one of our family's favorite restaurants, however, it's no longer in Times Square (I found this out later at home with my trusty internet connection). We ended up at Junior's where we had a patio table, a weird waiter, okay food, and AWESOME cheesecake. K had original, Mandy had chocolate swirl, suge had strawberry cheese pie, and I had chocolate mousse cheesecake. After that we said our goodbyes and headed in out separate directions. Mandy and I took a cab back to the PATH station and then took the train back to Hoboken and Mandy drove back to her apartment. We got back, drained, exhausted but happy around 10 p.m.

99compskibook
Jun 16, 2008, 8:41 am

#115 KIK jp! But really, you're quite luck as you live a train ride or two away from Juniors....

Juniors....

I just watched "Enchanted" and saw many New York places, including a big musical number set in Central Park! I can't believe they didn't show Belvedere Castle, but after all, it is unplottable!

120Mandy2
Edited: Jun 19, 2008, 9:25 am

I think JP is the Secret Keeper for the Belvedere that's why Bib and i were so close yet never saw it until JP was there...or it could be Cat...who is it??

ETA: you can tell I mean business because I used 2 question marks.

121biblioholic29
Jun 19, 2008, 9:34 am

KIK Mands! I hadn't thought of that but you must be right! Do you suppose we only saw it because they pointed out that sign to us? That was one of them right.

122Mandy2
Jun 19, 2008, 10:19 am

yea i think it was Cat!

123jugglingpaynes
Jun 19, 2008, 11:15 am

Yes, cat must be the secret keeper, because she had been there before. As I had said, all the street performing we did at the Delacorte Theatre on the other side of Turtle Pond, I never noticed the castle!

124biblioholic29
Jun 19, 2008, 11:28 am

It's Unplottable too! Remember all those maps we looked at and couldn't see it anywhere Mands? Cat, why didn't you just tell us all when we decided to meet there? Wait, you weren't even at that meeting were you? Hmmmm.....I sense a dastardly plan to confuse and disorient us...

125Mandy2
Jun 19, 2008, 11:49 am

Hmmm...who picked it as a meeting place? perhaps she mentioned it to JP before the meeting and then she watched us from her broom running around the park trying to find it...Now i'm picturing us all in a maze and bumping into walls and shuffleing along paths while Cat just hovers above laughing, which is making me LOL at work.

Suge and I were just fine. Neither of us have been sick. I'm sorry you weren't feeling well and hope you're better now!

#81 bib:
That's one I have a photo of, too. I'm really sorry about my camera! I've had such trouble loading images from it to flickr! Most photos are merely boxes with red x's. :( No worries, though - it's not the photos, it's the computer.

Following from post #98, suge and I then walked around Times Square for a bit. Suge thought it would be nice to go see a movie if we could find a particular theater she had in mind, but after much wandering, it turned out they had lost their business or moved. We then took a train home.

#101 jp:
Hmm...*waves to jp from ten feet away* You know me now 'cause I'm at your house right now! ;)
It wasn't planned! I'm sorry we didn't know we'd have ice cream.

#105 bib:
Or for dinner with pancakes the next night. ;)

Kerian was here at my house yesterday. My son and youngest were charmed by her and wanted to show her all around the house and yard. I took her to Barnes and Noble where I ended up spending much money (curse my addiction!), then to Trader Joe's and picked up pizza on the way home. My husband came home and we juggled some clubs in the front yard before I took K back to suge's. Cat practiced with 3 beanbags.

As we were juggling, son and youngest ran back and forth through our pattern. Youngest used some colorful language to explain why the clubs didn't hit her. Sorry, K, I hope she didn't teach you a new word. *blushing* I swear she's never said that before!

For me too, and ummm....I might have stopped at Border's for "dinner" last Saturday on my way home....

Jun 20, 2008, 10:56 am

for a min i was like "so what she stopped at border cafe for dinner, why is that bad?"

But i get it now, you mean Border's the bookstore.

I do. But now you've made me crave Border Cafe. I'm thinking maybe I'll go there for dinner now...

#127 jp:
Teach me any new words?! Ha!
It's perfectly fine. My youngest sister has said some shocking things recently as well. We're always baffled where she comes up with things. :)

#131 BIB:
KIK!
I'm going to Border's today as well. I'm meeting suge there where she hopefully won't cause much damage (she just did yesterday!) but we're having dinner somewhere else after that.
By the way, we went to a vegatarian restaurant last Friday - it was amazing and we both want to go there again. :)

Jun 20, 2008, 12:34 pm

ohhhh the Borders Cafe is HEAVEN!!! I work next door to a Borders and they have these INCREDIBLE cheese and herb pretzels, to die, I tell you, to DIE!! I have to go deposit my paycheck there now. goodbye.

I had a really awesome and fantabulous time meeting you guys, I want to do it again.

K and I are doing the Statue tomorrow, so if anyone wants to come please do. We'll be leaving at the crack of dawn (read: noon). I'll be the one holding the sign that says "screw you, I'm not a tourist".

#133 That's actually what I ended up having for dinner that night, of course the pretzel was just a front to cover the real reason for going to Borders.

Mandy and I were actually referring to a restaurant nearby called the Border Cafe that sells Tex-Mex for cheap. It's one of the family's favorite places to eat (they have a whole page in their menu that's Vegetarian!) but often ends up causing confusion because of the name. There actually is a Borders about a mile away from it too, which of course doesn't help!

136Mandy2

This is the sign in front of it and is also one of my favorite restaurant signs...

124 & 125- Hey, I didn't mean to get you lost! I'm such a good secret keeper, that even I didn't remember where exactly it was!

138: LOL! Yes I did, JP, and she didn't have anything on underneath! She is French, you know.

(before any French people get offended, I am quoting a movie)

139: Thanks, Cat. I am taking an online basic photography class this summer through the local college. I keep waiting for an assignment where I can submit the pictures of JP juggling you :)

141jugglingpaynes
Jun 20, 2008, 10:38 pm

Hehe! Those were good pictures!

Let's see, what assignment could you use them for?
Mothers and Daughters?
A Day at the Park?
Circus on the Go?

jp, now I want to know what word your youngest used, and what exactly she said. ;)

143jugglingpaynes
Jun 22, 2008, 7:38 pm

*snort!* I suppose it wasn't terrible, considering the vast array of colorful words...

When we made some comment about her being lucky we weren't hitting her, she said:

"It's because I'm too damn short!"

KIK, I suppose they might as well take your entire paycheck. ;) We need to go there again so we can have pretzels! :)
KIK! No wonder they were solod out of tickets on Saturday - you forgot your specially made t-shirt for the trip! Another time, though I'm happy enough with the tour we had on the water taxi. :)

#137 copmpski:
Those are so great photos! What did you think of the statue? True we saw it from a furhter distance than you so it appeared smaller to us, but I had always thought the statue was taller, or that more of it was the Lady herself and not what she stands on.

#138 jp:
KIK!!

#140 compski:
*gasps*

#143 jp:
I hope you're not embarrassed. I was suprised but very amused. It was even funny. *hugs* As I said, my kid sister is saying some truely shocking things as well, all the time now. They're just making me laugh at this point, though we're encouraging her to not say such things in front of our grandparents or at school.

147jugglingpaynes
Jun 23, 2008, 7:31 pm

#146 re 143: Nah, I'm not embarrassed. I was much more embarrassed when cat was 4 and said "What the hell?" in a public place in front of another couple with a young child. They've all used words now and then. Comes from having parents who went to public school. ;o)

K, tell suge her hair would turn white if she heard me when I get really angry. ;o)

Think volcano erupting, children covering their ears, husband running for cover....

Luckily, I don't get angry too often.

JP, that sounds really, really scary! I promise to TRY to behave!!!!

LADYNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN! MY ENGLISH SISTER!! WHEN ARE WE GOING ON A HEG/HAG SAFARI???

Mands, thats a really cool sign. Its making me hungry. Tex-mex.... yummmy!

Thanks, compski, unfortunately, we did need the good luck, we got nowhere NEAR the lady. We had to be content with the water taxy that takes you around in the water. It was cool, I love water and the sea... mmm I want to go on a ship or boat again.

Oh, dear. I seemed to have missed that post of suge's (#150). She did indeed seem to really love being in the water. She made me think of the Titantic movie the way she would hold her arms out while we stood at the front of the water taxi. :)

#149 jp:
If I get gasps from any swears here, I imagine I could make everyone's hair turn white when I'm exceptionally mad as well. ;)

I actually sought this thread out just to say I'm still trying on suge's comptuer to load images from my camera to her computer to get them to flickr. It's not working! :(
