I am reading THE MAGUS by John Fowles. It's an older book, written in 1965 and revised in 1977. I am reading the revised version and am about halfway through. Has anyone else read this? It's quite different, isn't it? What did you think?

I attempted to read it, but gave up after the 4th or 5th stupid scenario the main character falls for in a row. It was just too infuriating. Fowles is really hit or miss with me, I liked The French Lieutenant's Woman and The Collector, A Maggot was ok, but so, so very weird. I have a copy of Daniel Martin, but haven't cracked it yet.

I read it sometime in the 70's and can't remeber a thing about it. It was a very trendy book in the UK at the time along with One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Dice Man and A Glastonbury Romance.

There was a film as well with Michael Caine and Anthony Quinn which I saw and also can't remember much about.

I read it a very long time ago, what must have been the original version. The lingering impression is of something rather dark and mystical, with a naive individual caught up in some sort of ritualistic mission. Or that might not be it at all. I seem to recall an ambiguous ending. Sorry, I guess that's not very helpful at all.

What's your impression?
