Tanglewood Tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne 2002

Originally written by Hawthorne (1804-1864) in 1853, this is a reproduction of the 1918 edition published by Hodder & Stoughton and includes all 14 of the full-page colour pictures done by Edmund Dulac for that edition.

The tales are retellings of six Greek dramas in a style that is easier for a younger audience. The tales are:-
- The Minotaur
- The Pygmies
- The Dragon's Teeth
- Circe's Palace
- The Pomegranate Seeds
- The Golden Fleece.

The book is printed on thick paper in a large point size making it a swift read for adults, but a charming easy to read one for children, although the language is rather old fashioned for the modern youngster.

This book was a sequel to The Wonder Book for Girls and Boys which was first published in 1851, and by the Folio Society in 2008. The FS also published two other works by Hawthorne, The House of the Seven Gables (2012) and The Scarlet Letter (1992).

This 236 page edition has a nine page introduction by Hawthorne and dark red endpapers. The top page edge is stained dark red and the book is bound in grey-green cloth blocked on the cover and spine in red, green and gold with illustrations. The red-brown slipcase measures 26.1x19.3cm.

>1 wcarter: I have this one and The Wonder Book for Boys and Girls. Beautiful books that will be a joy to read with the grandchildren one day, old language and all. :)
