Hi folks! What is everyone reading this month?

(pretending it's still April) I enjoyed two memoir comics, bought at a bookstore recently where one author was interviewing the other.

Raised By Ghosts follows an introverted, artistic middle schooler, housed but underfed and generally neglected by her parents, as she gradually makes close friends through high school in the 1990s. The artwork is lovely, almost painted in earth tones. I'm a sucker for books or comics with locales I recognize, in this case record shops, clubs, and street scenes in Berkeley and El Cerrito, California. (Dan Clowes and Adrian Tomine do this for me too, incorporating Oakland and Berkeley landmarks.)

Bury me Already (It's Nice Down Here) tells Julia Wertz's story of pregnancy, birth, and the first few years of parenting, against a harrowing backdrop of the beginning of the Covid pandemic, the mental illness and near death of a sibling, and smoke from the intense wildfires north of San Francisco at that time. Julia is hilarious as usual, but given her experiences also poignant and philosophical. Some passages had me crying, though many more had me laughing out loud.
