Autumn 2026 collection - speculation

Well since the summer collection has been announced I thought it would be useful to have a discussion/speculation thread for the next collection.

I just saw on Jeff Vandermeer's Facebook page that apparently the Southern Reach novels are coming to Folio. I don't use Facebook all that much outside of bookish buy/sell groups but the page appears genuine. I'm not certain whether this is referring to books that might be imminent or a just signed deal that will see the books arriving some way down the line.

I quite enjoyed the first three books when I read them although I've not read the more recent fourth. I would personally be keen on Folio editions of this series.

>1 zorg2099: But do Folio have the stamina for a series? The assumed-by-many Culture series disappointment may put a curb on one's enthusiasm. Having said that, I'm going to speculate that the Autumn Collection will have the next Culture volume in it. That is on the basis that, unless they are being unusually unambiguous (i.e. ''yes'' or ''no''), you really can't draw any firm conclusions from anything Customer Services say or imply, since their whole raison d'etre appears to be to politely bat you off without imparting any definitive information about forthcoming publications.

>2 Elysium72: Just have to see how it shakes out I guess. The Southern Reach is just four books though and the post from Vandermeer implies multiple books (and therefore probably a deal for all four) rather than just Annihilation.

If the Culture series is indeed not being continued I would think its rights issues rather than sales given they seem to be selling well. For a long series like The Culture I think usually deals are signed for a handful of books at a time which increases the chances of the series being dropped if the sales don't meet expectations or a new deal can't be agreed upon for the next batch of books.

>1 zorg2099: This is legitimate. VanderMeer stated it'll be years before FS publishes, however.

>3 zorg2099: It may be just four books right now, but Amazon says that it'll be a five-book series ("book 1 of 5", etc). I too enjoyed the first three; I also thought the film version was a poor adaptation - some things just don't translate well to film.

Can we guess that IT and American Psycho could be on the table in the fall?

The next Dune is likely.

How about Project Hail Mary?

Autumn is traditionally time for a Murakami to appear. Yes, there were strong hints that the series was over, at least for the series artist thus far. But I can't see how they could look themselves in the mirror if they decline to do an edition of 'End of the World and Hard-Boiled Wonderland'. If they did that last one, then I feel Folio could honourably call it a day.

>8 BreakBeatDJ: If they're able to license it, my guess would be 2027 at the earliest. Random House has their own Deluxe Edition coming out in December that I'm going to assume they're going to want to milk first.

>1 zorg2099: I adored the first three. I thought the fourth was unnecessary, self-indulgent, and aimless.

I'm curious whether the original or edited version of book 2 will be used. COS&M has multiple versions too - I wish he'd cut that **** out.

>12 niftium: Yes, it'll be interesting to see if they do the original stand-alones, the all-in-one trilogy, or the 10th anniversary stand-alones, each with their own edits.

>3 zorg2099: I think it's too early to declare the Culture series as discontinued by Folio. While a year gap may be unusual for a series already running with Folio, I don't think it's conclusive that it has been discontinued.

In any case, Folio's 2026 titles are not yet fully announced.

Any responses from Folio Customer Service concerning future book titles are practically worthless at this point.

>12 niftium: I read the original trilogy quite a while back, hadn't realised there was a revised edition of book 2 since then.

>14 Ibkay: Yeah I really hope so. I think the main thing that had me worried was the particularly emphatic language used in the CS reply (can confirm etc) but we'll just have to wait and see I guess.

Is later in 2026 too early for completion of Folio's Book of Dust series? Pullman's The Rose Field was published in October 2025.

>16 Elysium72: It took three or four years for the previous volumes so I doubt we'll see it this year. But maybe they'll surprise us!

Heretics of Dune, I could see A Knight of Seven Kingdoms for Winter.

>19 hotgandalf: I would be curious to see how well additional Dune books would sell. People seem to disagree on which books are worthwhile; some consider only the first one to be excellent, others think the story only reaches a cohesive thematic endpoint at book 2 or 3 while others think God Emperor is the true conclusion and enjoy the book as well. But in most of the Dune discussions I've seen, the majority opinion seems to be that the quality drops off hard after God Emperor of Dune. I personally haven't actually read past it myself.

>20 zorg2099:

They've done four out of six Dune titles, so I really hope they will finish the set. I'd rather not be stuck with an incomplete series, though personally I never got into the ones after the first one. But then it's been a while since I read the complete set, so who knows how I might see it today. I plan on reading the series when I've got a complete set, either by FS or Centipede Press.

>20 zorg2099: There's an incredible amount of world building in books five and six, and the writing quality is just as strong, imo, even if the plotting isn't. Heretics, in particular, introduces some great characters that really enrich the Dune saga. Chapterhouse is where the plotting gets a little wonky, but it's a little hard to judge since it serves as set-up for the seventh book that Herbert planned but never started. Both are still worth reading, though, since they paint what Leto II was working towards in GEoD -- without them, the series would end on more of a hypothetical note instead of concretely illustrating Herbert's intentions.

>22 HonorWulf: I don't have the Folio editions of the first four books yet but plan to pick them up later this year and I am due for a re-read. I will probably read books 5 and 6 to form my own opinion and satisfy my curiosity. Let's see if a Folio edition of book 5 is out by then! Otherwise I will probably try an e-book.

edit: I think I might have some old mass market paperbacks of all 6 lying around somewhere, will have to see if I can find them.

Perhaps later this year they will follow up Emily St John Mandel's Station Eleven with Sea of Tranquility?

>24 Elysium72: Incidentally there's still 237 copies of Conversation Tree Press's signed and letterpress printed collector's edition state still available although at US$285 its a fair bit steeper than a presumptive Folio edition.

>25 zorg2099: Funnily enough, it was after viewing the CTP version that the thought occurred to me that Folio might give it a go sometime. Not so keen on CTP's artwork on this one, and I'm not keen enough on this book to go beyond a Folio-level edition.
