I've made several chnges to bring the Place, Character and Event pages up to snuff with the other pages I've recently revamped (tags, tagmashes, genres, LCC and MDS).
Improvements include:
Examples:
https://www.librarything.com/place/London%2C+England%2C+UK Places — London, England, UK
https://www.librarything.com/place/Paris%2C+France Places — Paris, France
https://www.librarything.com/place/Hell Places — Hell
https://www.librarything.com/character/Andy+Warhol — Character — Andy Warhol
https://www.librarything.com/character/Santa+Claus Character — Santa Claus
https://www.librarything.com/character/Satan — Character — Satan
https://www.librarything.com/events/World+War+II Events — World War II
https://www.librarything.com/events/Boston+Massacre Events — Boston Massacre
Some ideas for improvements:
1. Tagmash has a special search box on it, so you can make new tagmashes. But we need an easy way to search for a place, character or event on place, character and event pages. As it is, you'd have to search and then switch facet on the left of the results. I think that's suboptimal.
2. Places need to get correlated to real places, so you could see a map of significant places around you.
Improvements include:
- Pages now include the now-standard bar, allowing you to see results as covers, titles or—new—the previous "table" format.
- The bar includes filtering by media, publication year and whether the books are in Your books
- Related tags section
- Related lists section
Examples:

I have a sparkly unicorn pony for this one request:
-- Filter by series - People want to see all the books in a series with a specific character. Especially a more common name like John Smith or Ben Jones.

What happened to the character descriptions? I didn't always use them, but I liked to fill them in for series so I could keep track of who's who.

What is 'order' in the table view supposed to be? It seems always empty and I have no inkling what it could be in the context of character pages
5DuncanHill
Is there no way to sort the list or table on the Character pages alphabetically by title? They seem to be random.
6SandraArdnas
>5 DuncanHill: I think they are sorted by popularity, with most catalogued at the top

>5 DuncanHill:
Having a sort by publication date on these pages would be nice; would help if you're looking to follow a character's story arc, see how a place develops over various series, etc.
>3 amanda4242:
Yes, seconding that, hope to see the descriptions return as they're handy to add an "Also see..." with link, for example when it's a character who is also an author. (Maybe even a Links section such as appears on series page?)
ETA:
The new pages are missing the remarks bit that used to be there, where the text in parentheses from CK displays – for example CK entry made as: Zeus (deity), the 'deity' text is meant to show up on the character page.

>3 amanda4242: I'm also missing this, and the text in parentheses.

>1 timspalding: The search bar defaulting to the Works facet no matter which page one is one when searching has to be a very low-hanging fruit to improve upon. IMO, when you're on Talk, it should default to the Talk facet, on a tag page to the Tags facet, etc.
The better you can guess the user's intentions the more you'll save server resources as well. And the time of the user searching, because they won't be waiting on useless results anymore.
The hint text in the search bar could indicate where the search would go to by default. Currently it's "Search LibraryThing" on most/all pages ("Search site" on Add books), but it could become "Search Talk" when in Talk and "Search Tags" when on a tag page, etc.

Most of the time when I do a search from Talk I'm looking for a book, especially if I'm starting from the Name that Book group.

I do think that the majority of searches are for works, so it makes sense that it would default to that. But I do regularly search other things so I can see why it would be nice to not have to click on after the search. Would it be possible to have drop-down menu where we could pick a facet to search?
12SandraArdnas
>9 ianreads: The search is conducted across the board, so there's no saving resources. By choosing a facet, you're merely filtering the results. Also, I really don't want it to consider the page I'm on because 99.99% of the time, that is not what I'm searching for. That is merely a page I'm content to move on from. Otherwise, I open Home in a new tab and then do the search

>12 SandraArdnas: You're right, that seems correct. But the most valuable resource is our time anyway. Considering the page you're on would be just one way to go about it. A dropdown, a selector, or some syntax could work just as well. A proliferation of search boxes would not be the way to go IMO.
Talk was just a (bad) example, by the way. Tim was musing about ways to "search for a place, character or event on place, character and event pages".

It's not actually searching across the board. It does a search on the "type" you're on, and then a different, faster "facet" check.
But, yes, I think if we changed it to search whatever you were on, people would be annoyed. I'm not sure how to solve this without a second search box on some pages. We used to have a selector, and that was fussy and actually wouldn't help here, because it would be so unwieldy.

I'm also curious about the absence of parenthetical text and the character description box. Will that information be coming back?
And I really liked having the covers and the titles both on the same page. Any chance that could be added back as a view? I thought that was what table would be at first, but it just lists titles with no cover images.
And I second Nevov's suggestion that a LINKS section be added for connecting author and character pages or for adding resource pages about the character.
