We watched the 2012 film, Lincoln, directed by Steven Spielberg, in class today.
It was a very personal view, but also reveals some of the nitty-gritty of the politics and Congressional machinations. It’s the second part I’d like to explore, especially the roles played by Seward, Steven’s and Grant.

The Rise and Fall of the Second American Republic talks about their roles in it and the politics involved, but it's just one part of the larger history so might not be exactly what you want.
I really like how she shows how the push for civil rights for Black people and then the fall of Reconstruction were linked to other social justice issues of the 19th century. Much of it (though not all) because the business owning class were put out that they couldn't have slaves anymore, and trying to recreate the system and its hierarchies.

>2 keristars: I will try that. Thanks! Along that line too, I just came across a book about post WW2 discriminatory practices you might also find interesting.

>1 2wonderY: Have you read Team of Rivals? That's the book the movie is (loosely) based on.

>4 norabelle414: A long long long time ago. I only have impressions left, all good. Yes, I’d better revisit it. Thanks!
