Hello all,
When I was a teenager in the mid-80s a friend of mine lent me what I believe was a series that I unfortunately cannot recall the author of. I think the series "might" be called "War of the Gods" (but there a number of series and books that use that as a title, and Fantastic Fiction yielded no helpful results). It is a retelling of the classic Norse mythos, I believe following Odin as a young adult to manhood and eventual godhood. I know there are a number of series that retell the Norse mythos, but this was almost certainly a product of the 1980's, no later than that. If anyone can come up with an answer here to help me find this, I will make many offerings to the Gods in your name and ask them to protect you at sea and on the battlefield. Thank you for your time.

This might have been a better fit for the Name That Book group, but I suspect you're thinking of Poul Anderson's War of the Gods. It features Njord (not Odin) incarnating as a human and follows his rise to greatness.

This does not match your description, but it looks like Michael Jan Friedman was writing a Norse-inspired series starting around 1985: The Hammer and Horn.

>4 HugoNebula: There are so many nooks and crannies on LT it's hard to follow everything. Here's a link to the Name that Book Group.

>3 eclbates: I love those books, but they aren't about Odin, rather Vidar, Odin's son and they are set in modern times. Great stuff.
