Sorry to see that Steve died even though he was somewhat of a troublemaker. He did the right thing in trying to save Joanne.

Yes, Steve’s death was a poor ending, even though he was an unlikeable character.
Was he a strong enough swimmer to attempt to get to Joanne; was he aware of the bad currents in that part of the sea; was he coming from the point of view of being a cop, or was he emotionally concerned for her and, thus, made the wrong decision to go after her?
All these questions, plus the fact that someone else was able to get to Joanne, makes me think he did the wrong thing in trying to save her. A pointless waste of a life.
