Did Wesley and Heffernan do the right thing with Diane?

Diane was only a child at the time of the murder of her father so Wesley and Heffernan decided not to prosecute her.

They did the right thing, any other choice would be immoral to me

It was morally the right thing although hardly playing by police rules where murder is concerned.

In the grand scheme of things, I don’t think there was anything to gain by taking this further. No evidence pointed to unlawful killing. Apart from her confession (and who can say she remembered everything correctly?), I don’t think there was anything the Crown Prosecution Service would have seen as enough to go ahead with.
