It was morally the right thing although hardly playing by police rules where murder is concerned.

In the grand scheme of things, I don’t think there was anything to gain by taking this further. No evidence pointed to unlawful killing. Apart from her confession (and who can say she remembered everything correctly?), I don’t think there was anything the Crown Prosecution Service would have seen as enough to go ahead with.
