Book # 51
Defending Dixie's Land: What Every American Should Know About the South And The Civil War by Isaac C. Bishop
I won this through early reviewers.
I requested this because I have an interest in Civil War history. I started it and then put it aside. It was different than what I expected. Tried it again and put it aside again.
It was interesting, well written and dense with facts and quotations. Finally, I decided if I was going to read it I had to take the plunge. It's not that long of a book, it just requires you to think about things a lot.
It is a defense of the South in the Civil War as the author says, he is defending it as if he were an attorney in a court case.
I have relatives who fought for the South and I am against revising history because people's feelings get hurt. So I kind of understood where Mr. Bishop was going with this.
I was a little surprised by his take on slavery and Lincoln. But he gives you plenty to think about and while I'm not sure I agree with everything he says, a lot of what he says I do agree with. And a lot of what he says makes complete sense. About our government today not being what the Founding Fathers had in mind and how we are more slaves today to government than in any other period in history.
Anyway this is a very interesting book and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get a full picture of what was going on in the Civil War and still goes on to this day. Not everything is told by our historians who write for the winners of historical events.
There is another side to every story and if you stick with this book, you will learn some things.

>4 hredwards: That does sound interesting, Harold. I won't read it because I live with it both in memory and in this _____ present. (I can't think of an adjective to adequately describe our present.)
I'm not among the 75ers very long each day, but I will look forward to checking back on your reading!

>6 LizzieD: It was interesting. As I said I don't quite agree with everything he said but a lot of it was true.
And it made me think, which most of my reading is escapism and enjoyment, so this was different.
