I received an email today that the Mystery Book Offer is back.
"For 24 hours only, the Folio Mystery Book Offer is back.
Starting from 8am at your local time on 24 June buy two or more Folio books and we'll include a mystery book completely free.* "
If you have taking part in the previous Mystery Book Offer, which book did you get? Are you are planning on partaking in this offer, and if so, what mystery book are you hoping to get this time?

I think the last one had two Josephine Tey books, A Perfect Spy by John Le Carre, The Book of Proverbs and On Photography.

In the Mystery Book Promotion in 2024, I received Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. I wonder whether they will be trying to give away items that aren't selling that well, or if it's a more curated collection.

>3 mjlgardner1: Forgot about Northanger Abbey!

Let me see if I got this right—it’s not that the book belongs to the 'Mystery' genre. The mystery is that you don’t know which book you’ll get, and most likely it’ll be one they can’t sell and just want to get rid of?

>5 jose2486: Absolutely correct.

I've gotten 3 free mystery books through this promotion over the years: The Blue Flower, Big Chief Elizabeth, and The Secret Agent.

Yes, you just get a free book with your order. The 2024 offer was for the leap-year day, IIRC. The Clicking of Cuthbert was also one of the mystery books then.

I got Big Chief Elizabeth, on my single mystery book acquisition. But that was some time ago.
10Cardboard_killer
I got a rock.

>10 Cardboard_killer: It wasn't a rock. It was a rock lobster.

Got the same offer. I'm in Canada EST so I suspect all the good stuff will already be taken. Folio also sent me a nice $25.00 credit on my next purchase for the birthday so hoping for a miracle!

Pointless offer, tbh. Like going into a bookshop and randomly buying something off the remainders table without looking to see what it is. There is no value in such an act, unless you are lucky or undiscerning.

Getting a book you don't want is actually a negative offer, incurring the cost of either shelf space or mental energy to discard it.

Unless it’s actually something good (albeit unlikely). Last time I got the book of proverbs, which has sat in my bedroom unread ever since.
I bought a couple of books I wanted this morning anyway, may as well have a freebie on the slightest possibility it’s worthwhile.

>15 The_JPS: You were very lucky with Proverbs. FS also produced a similar small sized version of the Book of Psalms - they are lovely editions. I've been disappointed that FS have not done Song of Solomon and a few other Old Testament books

I ended up picking up 2 books this morning to make use of the free mystery book offer. I have been meaning to pick up the Buried Giant anyway as it is getting low on stock.
My collection has expanded significantly since the last mystery book offer, so there is probably a high chance of receiving something I already have, especially if it was something that has been on sale in recent years.

I've had good luck with their Mystery Book promotion in the past and generally enjoy it. Poking around today to see what might entice me to make a purchase, minimally, ended up being a nearly $300 proposition, though. At roughly $100/book, when one is a wild card, meh. I'd be far more likely to jump if there was a shipping promotion or something to go along with the Mystery offer.

Even if you don't like the Mystery book you can always sell it on, so it can be viewed as a discount of sorts. Also, people are often willing to swap them - I did that last time.
20Amarisy
I placed an order for a couple of books because my b/day discount was due to expire. If the free book is one I have, then I'll donate it to charity.
21willgreenzilla
I put in an order for 2 books today... pretty sure the mystery book will be pulled from the no one buys these pile and tossed in, lol. I'll probably make a short video opening up my order with the mystery book to see what kind of surprise I'll find inside! Lol.

Has anyone received a book they already have? I would hope (maybe falsely) that FS wouldn't just send you something they can see you have already purchased.

Yes, during a previous offer this happened. Just gifted it.

>22 coynedj: I got three Big Chief Elizabeths one year.

One year they were doing mystery parcels (£9.95 for three books, or something like that - the books had minor defects like missing slipcases). I ordered a couple and, among the selections, I got two copies of Five Children and It which was slightly disappointing. On the plus side I got a couple of Agatha Christies (The ABC Murders and another one which I can't remember right now).
Edit to add: after checking, it was The Body in the Library.
