England’s Constable. The Life and Letters of John Constable by Joseph Darracott - 1985

In the membership years of The Folio Society, a member who agreed to purchase four books in the next year was sent a presentation volume free of charge (they could also be purchased). These presentation volumes were of a very high standard, and usually of a different style to standard or core editions as they normally had far more illustrations. This lovely small book was the presentation volume for 1986.

This is a quite detailed biography of Constable that contains extract from many of his letters to emphasise episodes in his life. Constable is considered to be one of Britain’s greatest artists, and the book is illustrated on almost every page with 82 colour and monochrome reproductions of his paintings.

The 144 page book has a preface by the author and is bound in grey-brown cloth, with a pasted-on pictorial cover label printed in brown and a brown spine title label that runs from bottom to top. It has pale yellow flecked endleaves and the 24.1x15.7cm. slipcase is printed with a wrap-around colour picture. There is an index of the illustrations at the back of the book.

Copies are readily available on the secondary market and mine cost the princely sum of £5.
